Very beautiful and peaceful place. Not an ordinary cemetery. Well worth the visit. You can take a peek inside the magnificent tombs and see very old and surprising coffins as well as pictures and other artifacts. Not to mention numerous cats. Pro tip: grab a tram 28 after visiting. It departs right outside the cemetery gates and this rout takes you to Alfama through picturesque districts. This route is the best for tourists thus it gets very crowded and here you have the 1st stop, so there's a good chance to sit and enjoy the whole route.

A walk on memories, feelings, snapshot into the future. Its not sad, the trees, the smell of flowers sometimes mixed with no many candles, its like walking in a peaceful city of dead bodies but the memories are still alive. If you want to see how it is life after death its a unique place to say that maybe its not so bad. Please visit it with sunshine, but specially close to sunset. From the graveyard to the river, a fantastic perspective of life.

Visitors to Alvor could easily miss this place and if they did that would be a shame. The cemetery is a fascinating place full of beautiful headstones and interesting crypts. Touching tributes, written and photographic abound make this the sort of attraction you could lose yourself for an hour or more. We had the place to ourselves when we visited which added to the feeling of peace and tranquillity. A great place to come to get a break from the beach!

the monumental portico from the demolished church of São Domingos, constitutes one of the most outstanding portals of the Portuguese renaissance. Dating from the 30s of the 16th century, it gives access to the public cemetery. It was founded in the early 17th century near the alconchel door, outside the city walls, and handed over to the local authority after the extinction of religious orders.
