Great walk to the very top. Why stay there and not go to the top. Fabulous short visit. Great views from the main square.

Just love the short climb up to the castle and to breath the fresh air here. The most spectacular views over the Aegean can e seen towards Symi. The small cafe has excellent Thyme honey on offer after the harvest and is one of the best honey's we have ever purchased.

I really enjoyed my time visiting the Koules Venetian fortress - an iconic feature of the Heraklion port. With a nominal entry fee of €2, you can enjoy a good hour or so wandering around, with amazing views over the port as well. A must see if you're in Heraklion.

Monolithos Castle

This is totally undersold, an easy-ish climb from the parking (coffee shop nearby for after!) and the views were exceptional. You can walk around and into the small church at the top, and also light a candle (donations can be left there too). There is no entrance fee, but should be!

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes

Reviewed By FedoraOnTour - Sidcup, United Kingdom

Largely rebuilt by the Italians this is a very beautiful building - lovely views from the windown and lots and lots of interesting stuff for history buffs - beautiful mosaic floors nicked from Kos. You do get a feel for how the palace was during the crusades.

The Castle of Kavala

It was my first time walking with friends towards the castle maybe little tricky finding it as you need to past by the houses along the alley to the top of the hill. There are directions and you may have to take some stairs or steep hill to get there. Its a beautiful scene make sure its a sunny day to enjoy the view from the top. It was really enjoyable for me and friends and certainly for those whom loves nature, scenary and photography.

The Venetian Castle of Nafpaktos

Free castle with nice view and a lot of history.

Reviewed By amX1021ZF - Reading, United Kingdom

You can reach the castle from the town by different routes but all are quite intriguing and steep! The castle is kept in reasonable condition but once at the ramparts, keep hold of children as there is nothing in place to stop them from falling over the walls! There is a guide if you need help and also a small chapel at the top. The castle has been rebuilt many times and extended by the Venetians when occupied by them. It has various levels of defences up the hill. It would be nice to have a cafe for refreshments as it is thirsty work climbing up to and in the castle grounds so don't forget to bring water bottles with you. It takes around 30 minutes by foot to travel from the town harbour to the castle entrance or 5 to 10 minutes by car. Views from the ramparts are spectacular.
