My wife and I did this tour with Claude. Two points to put peoples minds at ease. First, is that he was on time and his vehicle was very safe, comfortable and reliable. He went through great lengths to keep us on time to what was a very full-day schedule. Second, is his knowledge about the region and the war itself. He knows the full-background and history of the great war and his knowledge of the military regiments is outstanding (Canadian, British, German, Australian, French, etc). In particular, I was interested in the history of the PPCLI in the region and was not disappointed. His family has lived in the region for generations and this brings a personal touch to the the tour. We were not disappointed.

In the 13C., along with Bruges and Ghent, Ypres was one of the great Cities of Flanders though it later entered a long decline. In the First World War it was the fulcrum of the Ypres Salient, a bitterly fought-over enclave protruding into the German lines, and the town was almost completely destroyed. After the war, it was rebuilt in traditional style. Today, it is a focal point of commemoration of the terrible slaughter that took place between 1914-1918, while the countryside around is a vast necropolis with around 170 military cemetery and many other reminders of war. Beside visiting the town, we will discover: The Menin Gate; Saint George Church; Flander Field Museum; Tyne Cot Cemetery; The Memorial Museum Passchendaele; Mont Kemmel and Bayernwald Trenches; The American W.W.I. Cemetery; Diksmuide. The delightful countryside surrounding the city of Ypres offers many picturesque routes for walking and bicycling, and welcomes visitors to a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.

Thankfully, the battlefield is largely as it appeared in 1815. Rolling hills, farm fields, the wooded and walled Hougoumont (well-restored) and la Haye Saint (not so much). Still, the vibe and the atmosphere is evocative of the crucial Napoleonic struggle that took place here. The museum is excellent. Creative displays, lots of artifacts. The great Lions mound is a bit of a distraction. But it does afford spectacular views of the entire battlefield. Two downsides: the busy road that runs right through the field, north to south, is a little offputting. And Napoleon’s command position was overgrown with shrubs when I was there.

My husband had business in Paris all day so I booked Frederic to take me on a private champagne tour. I was a little nervous that I would have a good time by myself but within a few minutes of driving down the road, I was completely at ease and had made a new friend. Our first stop was Reims Cathedral where I learned about the coronation of France's Kings and the architecture and history behind the beautiful cathedral. From there, we headed to a large Champagne house where I joined a few others to tour the cellar and have a tasting. Frederic was waiting for me outside as we went to lunch together. Lunch was delicious and I felt very local to the region. We finished our day at a small house where I ended up with a private tour of the cellars and tasting experience because I was there in January and it was low tourist season. We returned to Paris that evening and I have been telling everyone about what I learned since I have returned to Kentucky. January is rather bleak and chilly but I would happily return again in the winter because it meant very low crowds which made the experience feel even more special.

This excursion had to be cancelled due to bad weather. Initially the agency said it would take place but as the weather forecast became worse they cancelled. I am waiting for a refund now. They were right to cancel the activity, the weather really turned bad. I look forward to take this excursion in a future trip.

As a family with teenagers, it is always a challenge to find an activity that will be entertaining for all. Although they are not history enthusiasts, my kids said that this tour was the best day of our stay in Belgium (1 week). They especially liked the tour guide, Jamal and his dry sense of humour. Jamal was able to point out funny historical details, do little games with the group and make recommendations on restaurants and activities. He made all the difference. Thanks Jamal for this wonderful (rainy) day! Things to be improved: we should have taken a tour for only 1 city. If you like to stroll in leisurely in the city, visit museums, etc., the tour is a bit fast paced and won't allow you to shop, visit independently museums and historic buildings. Also, you'll be paired with Spanish groups going on the bus. Not the best logistical arrangements. However, the price is well worth it. 10/10 would do again.
