Sugar cane, Chocolate and coffee Tour The first trapiche (sugarmill) came to Monteverde in 1948 when Mr. Higinio Santamaría (grandfather of the present owner), moved from San Ramon of Alajuela to Monteverde. The journey was done with oxen carts, to thearea we know now as Santa Elena and lasted about 15 days, then it was installed and started working regularly. Approximately 13 years after the arrival of the family to Monteverde, Mr. Juan Santamaría Campos (father of the present owner) creates a partnership buying a diesel-powered mill. The idea of turning it in to an agro-tourism farm, was created with the aim of showing to visitors a representative part of Costa Rican culture where they can appreciate the process of sugar by the old way making brown sugar (tapa de dulce) and processing of fresh coffee cultivation in educational and cultural tour, which began on 2005.

Once the sun sets in the Costa Rican rainforest, we start hiking and looking for exiting species of animals while the jungle takes on a totally different character. It goes from a green cathedral-like forest, where beautiful shining blue morpho butterflies fly along small rivers, to a pitch-black jungle, filled with the sounds of millions of insects and dozens of frogs & toads. It is the same green fascinating forest, but now it´s dark and you are ready to go find what’s out there! It’s the best time to find, observe and photograph beautiful tree frogs, shy snakes, colorful insects, mammals and other rainforest creatures that only come out at night. The beautiful symphony of a tropical rainforest at night is one of the most exiting experiences; turn off the lights for a moment and listen to all the secret sounds. Be aware, it is quite an adventure to be in the rainforest at night.

We learned so much more than the fascinating process of the growing and refining of chocolate on our short hike through the rainforest. Juan, a very well educated naturalist, taught us about the unbelievable health benefits of cacao, the pollination of vanilla, medicinal plants, coffee making (and brewing methods), extracting sugar from sugarcane and creating our own drinks and chocolate concoctions. This tour was an unexpected highlight of our vacation! No one should miss it! It was fun, educational and eye opening. And don’t worry....we don’t think Juan really used his old sock for our coffee filter????????????

This is a four hour trek up the mountain (about 1500 foot climb) that has you walking on course rocks, walking in streams, and climbing steep rock faces using limited footholds and ropes to pull yourself up. It is NOT for someone over sixty who isn't physically fit! My wife and I (65 and 68 years old) made it, but it was a bit tough for us. That being said, the tour and especially our guide, Daniel, were amazing! You really don't need to bring anything as long as you wear a swimsuit. A backpack is just a burden to carry. In total, we "walked" about 9000 steps in 4 hours!

Efrain’s Night Tour is a MUST DO and a top highlight of our time in Costa Rica. Efrain (our Guide and Owner), was by far the most talented at spotting and describing the local wildlife and we will never forget this experience. During our time we observed frogs, spiders, snakes, sloths, scorpions and other night creatures. Efrain is so passionate and has deep family ties to the preservation and conservation of the Manuel Antonio Park. The night tour was so good, we had to use Efrain again for the Manuel Antonio Walking Tour the very next day! He also has a knack for getting some amazing pictures through his telescope with your phone for some amazing memories!

We offer a combination of attractions! Firstly, the chocolate tour starts with the cultural and biological background of cocoa in the world and here in Costa Rica. It further introduces into the collecting, fermenting, grinding and finally the making of chocolate, the drink of the gods. Secondly, we talk about coffee and its importance for Costa Rica's economic and cultural development. We have a showroom with important coffee picking instruments and a better explanation of the process of coffee production. We want to show you how to make Café-Chorreado, the real Costa Rican practice of preparing coffee. Finally, we want to look at one of the most important aspects of Costarican culture and tradition, the trapiche: A sugar cane-mill run by two beautiful oxen (Fast & Furious). Here we grind sugar cane to extract the juice and make all kinds of local and delicious candy (Dulce, Sobado, Espumas and Miel) you can try. This is for sure the sweetest tour in the area.
