Iquique (Spanish pronunciation: [iˈkike]) is a port city and commune in northern Chile, capital of both the Iquique Province and Tarapacá Region. It lies on the Pacific coast, west of the Pampa del Tamarugal which is part of Atacama Desert. It had a population of 180,601 according to the 2012 census. It is also the main commune of the Greater Iquique. The city developed during the heyday of the saltpetre mining in Atacama Desert in the 19th century. Originally a Peruvian city with a large Chilean population, it was ceded to Chile as result of War of the Pacific (1879–1883). Today it is one of only two free ports of Chile.

We booked the Wildlife Photo Safari Pacific-Andes tour from Iquique, a unique experience and probably the best way to learn about nature and culture of the Andes region around Iquique in a short time. Billy is extremely knowledgeable about the region and let no question unanswered (and we asked many!). Not only spotting a great variety of wildlife but also the overnight stay with an Aymara family at 4000 masl, listening to the songs and tales of Don Eugenio, and learning about their life and traditions, will remain unforgotten.

This agency is to be avoided ! We booked a tour including the Humberstone visit with this agency. While the guide was much involved and very passionate, the bus was very old and obviously not maintained. It broke down on the verge of the desert 75 km away from Iquique. We were told a replacement bus was supposed to pick us up but it never arrived (it was never sent actually). After 4 hours waiting in the middle of nowhere,we (15 tourists including kids) had no choice but to take a regular bus back to Iquique (at night!)

My experience was wonderful because of the beauty of the nature, the colour of the lagoon is impressive, a place worth it to visit. The bad part was the the service delivered by Tarapacá Travel, seems that they only care of taking money and nothing else. I say that because in our way there the van broke down... ok things happen and no blame in that, so despite of that “incident” we decided to enjoy our journey by ourselves because our guide was busy trying to fix the van!! Meanwhile under our excitement we were walking with out knowing over dangerous Phreatic zone, But how we could possibly would know without our tour guide guy. Thanks God nothing bad happened but what about if something could happened? Because we didn’t count with anything that could assist us in these cases, I mean, we were in the middle of nowhere without any gear or equipment in case of an emergency such as oxygen, water, blankets etc!! If wasn’t for a friendly guy who came to help us I don’t know what possibly could happen. The ideal is that a business that call themselves professional should have no only the emergency equipment but a radio system to keep in touch or be able to seek help. No impress at all with Tarapacá Travel Agency... no even a decent apology. If you are interested on visiting the laguna Roja I recommended it ???? % the place but go through another agency that operate professionally considering your comfort and safety.
The route to Salar del Huasco stands out from the local routes because of the easy way to access the Altiplano from Iquique. A road in very good condition takes us in some hours to more than 4.000 m, s.n.m. an area of specific biodiversity and very intense colors.
