Less known to foreigners, another section of the Great Wall also has a Museum, the Beiji Temple, and Bagua City with the Bagua Labyrinth.
We arrived via cruise ship in Tianjin and decided to visit this part of the wall as we were being escorted into Beijing, and are so glad that we did. It is nearly a 2 hour drive from the port to the wall, which ended up adding about 1 hour of our overall drive to Beijing, but was so worth it. We stopped near the wall and enjoyed eating at a local countryside restaurant where the food is tasty and plenty and very cheap before walking the wall. This section of the wall is not crowded at all and photos of it rival the ones that we took at other areas of the wall. Glad we decided to take this detour on our trip from Tianjin to Beijing!

Free entry, just like all Chinese museums as far as I know. Not a big museum but plenty of treasures to appreciate and learn about background. If you come on a right day, there are guides around to explain the history and stories surround the exhibition items. The place is always quiet, unless it's during the public holiday period.

We booked to hike from Jiankou to Mutianyu with Zhang (John) from hereisbeijing, so glad that we did! You get dropped at a ‘wild’ section of the wall, and hike to the restored Mutianyu section, where you can walk down, get a cable car or jump on the toboggan. The hike is fine, it gets you breathing but nothing anyone of average fitness couldn’t manage! John was awesome, spoke fantastic English, made sure we had all the information we needed, answered any questions on anything we had to ask on China in general and just couldn’t do enough for you. Definitely worth getting in touch if you want to see the wall (check his website or +86 136 8113 9171)
