We have seen pictures online and read about this place. And finally we got here. We had a rental car from Kutaisi and drove here ourselves. Not an easy ride with a bad car but a very interesting drive. The way ‘down’ from the pillal was needing to speed up on the car to get over the small hill, exciting, not for novice drivers. We were all alone, as out of tourist season. We know it is “just” a small building on a pillar but still felt very special coming here. It took us a good 4h, drive back and forth and the visit. At the foot of the pillar is a small chapel where we lit candles for our recent past family members. The lighter is in the drawer by the altar... Candle in the small and very friendly shop. It was just (early Jan) under renovation and seems they are making a few more buildings, the existing buildings are old and pretty so guess it will be a bit more touristic later on.

This is one of the best ethnographic museums I've ever visited. Svaneti has a long cultural history and this museum has artifacts and insight that spans it all. It's also beautifully filled.

This is a small museum dedicated to the greatest Georgian alpinist - Mikheil Khergiani. Here you will find out how this man lived, with its personal belongings, achievements. You will also see how Svani people lived in the past. In addition, there is a small climbing wall inside the tower.

We hiked all the way from Mestia and the place is just stunning although there are lots of 4x4 on the way making this experience a little bit annoying. They can drive it all the way to the lakes, pretty sad.

It was beautiful way. By car from Mestia to the bridge in the valley it is only a little while. From the bridge it is very nice track through a beautiful landscape with dense forest along the river. It is really impressive and relaxing. Mestia taxi drivers are already quite spoiled by tourists because they "show power of money" and usually charge 40-50 GEL for this ride. We had rented car from small company in Tbilisi for whole stay in Gerogia which saved us a lot of money during our trip. Rent (price for rent a car) was cheaper than in large world-known rental companies. We rented Mitsubishi Pajero 3.0 V6 4x4, automatic (Tiptronic), with AC, LPG/Gasoline. For those who are interested, here is the phone contact: +995 577 39 31 90 (this number we used) and the second one is +995 591 41 32 41. We saved much money by riding on LPG, it was really big advantage. Car 4x4 in the mountains it is sometimes a necessity. I definitely recommend visiting this place, as well as other places around Mestia. There is definitely something to see.

Coming from the town of Jvari you must drive uphill into the reserve around Inguri Dam. There is a parking lot but some cars can go further, to where the buildings are. They were closed when we were there. The dam itself is monumental. It is an awe-inspiring construction from the Soviet era that took around 30 years to finish. The lake is embedded into the beautiful surrounding nature. The colour of the water is attractive. From here you can go on exploring the upward Valley of the river whose flow is stopped by the dam. Downwards The Valley is not attractive at all.
