Otaru Aquarium

Reviewed By ambamb8 - Hong Kong, China

Given Otaru is a very small city in Hokkaido, it's unrealistic to expect a very cool aquarium. Frankly, having its own aquarium is already amazing. The closest encounter one can get:- - winter in snow, penguins walking next to you. - dolphin show with dolphin only 3m away. - touching the octopus and "sucks" by it. Great fun day for kids and parents.

Otaru Museum, Bank of Japan

Totally weird to expect that a visit to an old bank would be interesting.... but is was. The museum is situated in the old bank of Japan bank . Much of the display is in Japanese but there was an English video that lasted about 15 mins on the history of banking in Japan, the move from feudal money to the gold standard and a useful information on what banks do to regulate inflation/ deflation etc all of which are topical issues. Large solid building and you can go into the old vaults and view a variety of historic notes etc. Takes about 45 minutes but it is free and more memorable than the rest of Otaru which is somewhat brash and touristy. But I’m a 58 year Dad and less impressed by glittering glass, trinkets and ice cream!

We visited this site as part of our tour of Hokkaido. It was an entrepreneurial fisherman’s house called Aoyama Villa, built in the early 20th century, 1917, by a family who made their fortune from the annual herring run. The herring ran every year. They would catch enormous amounts, boil it, then squeeze it for the oil and the remainder was used to fertilise the soil. It has now been turned into a lovely museum. The house was massive with beautiful traditional gardens and lots of rooms. We were given a guided tour of the house, via our audio devices, which was very interesting, seeing the different rooms in the house and especially the toilets and the beautiful calligraphy screens.
