I was a bit apprehensive planning the trip to Senegal as I don't speak one word of french, so I contacted Malick weeks before I embarked on the trip, to plan a 1 day tour covering Dakar, Goree Island and the Pink Lake. Malick picked me up at my hotel on time (no African time) we have a full day tour, starting with a walk round downtown Dakar, pass the presidential palace, the famous cathedral, Sandaga market and other important buildings after which we took a 20min boat ride to Goree Island, a former slave Island. On our return from Goree Island, we set off for the Pink Lake stopping over at the African Renaissance Monument. Throughout the trip Malick narrated important details and events. A few days after relocating to Saly Resort Town, I called Malick to assist with my planned visit to Sandaga Market. He was most useful on the trip as he knew the right section of the market I would find Senegalese outfits and materials I wanted to buy and most importantly he assisted in translating and negotiating prices.

We went to Joal Fadiout as part of a day excursion of Nouvelles Frontieres from Dakar. The excursion consisted of going to a Rural market in the morning and the Shell Island. I did this excursion as I wanted to see more of Senegal. The Rural market was really interesting as this is where the local farmers sell their livestock such as goats, sheep, donkeys and horses. It also has a general market as well. We went to Shell market in the afternoon. This island has two walkways, one to the island itself and another one to a joint Muslim and Christian cemetery. We had a guide who lived on the island, show us the island. The entire island is covered with shells and there lots of places where you can buy local crafts. I really enjoyed this excursion as it gave me insight to the everyday life in Senegal.
