The 10 Best Budget-friendly Things to do in La Gomera, Canary Islands

March 4, 2022 Margarita Chappel

One of the seven Canary Islands, sun-drenched Gomera is one of the less visited of this Atlantic archipelago. Offering the perfect escape, Gomera's attractions include dramatic beaches, trails through tropical mountain scenery and misty rainforest. Hike the mysterious Garajonay National Park or mountainous Cumbre de Chijere. Soak up the sun in scenic Valle Gran Rey or on Puerto de Santiago's pretty beach. Popular with the yachting crowd, Gomera is reached by air or ferry from the other Canaries.

We walked for a day from Hermigua more or less following the El Cedro stream passing the waterfall, making a roundabout south of El Cedro area and back to Hermigua. Several hiking alternatives but rather steep and only for the sure footed. Also easy walks are possible in this fascinating forest.

Finca Canarias Aloe Vera

Finca Canarias is located in La Gomera in the area of Hermigua, on the northwest of the island. The 8.000 aloe vera plants are arranged within a field of 10.000 square metres located next to the Barranco de Monteforte. The farm is located just 8km from the National Park of Garajonay (Parque Nacional de Garajonay), a natural monument of almost 4.000 hectare (9.884 acres) recognized for being one of the largest laurel forest. Finca Canarias Aloe Vera is a small family business. We have been dedicated to the ecological cultivation for two generations. The variety that we grow is known as Aloe Barbadensis Miller, commonly referred to as “Aloe Vera”. At our plantation we offer a guided tour, so you will be able to feel and touch the plants.

We visited during our day trip to La Gomera. So glad that we did. Didier explained in detail all about this amazing plant and it’s very many benefits. He demonstrated a short harvest of the plant too. We were offered a small taste of it too and it was quite palatable. There was a small shop should you want to buy any products. We bought some and I’m currently a 1/4 of the way through a bottle of ‘Face Milk’ which I love. There’s no ‘hard sell’ here, just advice on the health and beauty benefits from this amazing plant. We weren’t disappointed and I’m sure you won’t be either.

Alto de Garojonay

A scenic tropical mountain lined with hiking trails.

Reviewed By DTM56 - Cambridge, United Kingdom

The walk we did from the main centre is about 11km and billed as 4 hours, but I think most people would not take that long. There is a quicker option to park much closer to the peak - I'm guessing that might be a 4km circuit - but whichever way you do it, the last part is going to be steep. The views from the peak, though, are really tremendous and worth the effort. From this spot you can see the entire island of Gomera, but we also had a great view of Tenerife and Mount Tiede. This was one of the highlights of our week in Gomera and I would definitely do it again.
