Fort Monroe's Casemate Museum

Reviewed By WeechWayToTravel

Fort Monroe has been continuously fortified since the early 1600s, originally by the Jamestown settlers. Robert E. Lee was one of the contributors to the stone fortress as a young engineer early in his career. Escaped slaves sought & were granted refuge here. Jefferson Davis was imprisoned here. Sooo much history. The fort is beautiful & has been granted national monument status. Complete with a mote which you can drive through the gated bridges. The Point Comfort Light is located here on the Chesapeake Bay. For perspective, I tend to not be interested in military history. I have traveled the world over. Even I found it very interesting & well presented & easy to follow for all. Well worth the trip, especially for Civil War history. Conveniently located off highway 64 at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.

This is a relatively small museum that has a lot of historical information about the area. The changing exhibit of the moment are the pictures and maps of a Union mapmaker. The detail in his pictures and maps were astounding! We found that exhibit to be very interesting!

This is one of my 5 year old sons favorite places to visit. If you ask him what he would like to do, (on any given day) going to Bluebird Gap Farm is always one of the 3 most common answers. Bluebird Gap Farm is a petting zoo, admission is free, they have two large playgrounds (a smaller one for toddlers and a larger one for the "older kids") picnic areas, vending machines if you get thirsty or need a snack. Its just a fun way to spend a couple hours with the kids or grandkids.

I love this place. A little piece of the Virginia forests in the middle of Hampton. Great place to learn to camp or to do soft camping with sites and cabins located in the park most paths are paved making it easy for walks bicycling and more. Beautiful shaded playground that knocks the hear back in the summer. In the winter after leaves fall the sunsets peering through forest feels mystical. The lake and the path around the lake gives you a great chance to see ducks, storks, turtles and even hawks and buzzards. I hope to go back in the spring and take some pictures. I can mention alot about this place. Haha they have alot of picnic table and a couple of shelters for parties or picnics

Park Lane Tavern

We were visiting the area for three days and ended up eating there twice. The food was so delicious that we went back a second night. We all had something different both nights and nothing disappointed us. I truly enjoyed the corn beef and cabbage with mashed potatoes the first night (the cabbage was out of this world, along with the mashed potatoes) and the bourbon chicken the second. The rest of the family enjoyed the London Broil, Bangers and Mash, Pepper Steak, Capra Portabello and the Burger! But the biggest hilight was the Whiskey Breading Pudding for desserts. The servicers was friendly and helpful with recommendations! Thanks Kina!

What a splendid day! There is free parking near the Casement Museum and/or Visitors Center and the activity is free! There are walking/driving tour maps near the Casement Museum, which take you to several places of note like Robert E. Lee's residence when he was stationed here, a cool light house, and the Lincoln Gun.

St. George Brewing Company

If you are looking for a beautiful space to hold a gathering and be socially distanced, then St. George Brewing Company is an excellent choice! We held a family gathering in the new outdoor space and it was perfect. The spacious tent with heaters kept us all cozy, while in an open-air, safe, and sanitized environment. We were able to reserve it for a reasonable fee and the staff was fantastic. The beer tasting was fun and delicious! With all the challenges right now, it was great to be in a place where we felt not only safe, but well cared for ~and we had a blast!
