Amman's layered history is reflected in its diverse people and its varied architecture. Home to numerous churches and mosques, the city is home to a multidenominational and multicultural population. Even within the midst of the ultra-modern commercial center of the city there is evidence of its ancient roots, with colorful ancient souks, Roman ruins, cultural museums and monuments painting a picture of the history of the region.

Step back 2,000 years in time with a visit to the ruins of this imposing amphitheater, which once held 5,000 spectators, and is still used today for theater and entertainment.
This is a must-see in downtown Amman, enjoy the theater, have some amazing pictures, and make sure to visit the museum inside, then enjoy a meal and a dessert in downtown.

This archaeological landmark features remnants from several different cultures.
We were fortunate to arrive at the citadel about 40 mins before sunset which meant we had the most atmospheric experience watching the sunset over Amman while the birds flocked to roost, with the call to prayer playing out from the Mosque. The citadel is a real land mark sitting high above Amman so the views are spectacular over the city. The Roman amphitheater is close by, but if you don't get time to go there you get a good view of it from here. THe site itself is of great archeological importance with Roman remains ( Hercules Temple) , and those of the Palace and church. AT 2JD , this is a must when visiting Amman.

Took us a while wandering some small back streets in order to find this gallery. It was so worth it. You go in via a small wrought iron gate, up a few stairs and find yourself looking at the remarkable remains of the Byzantine church of St George. There is not very much left but a few columns, however the space and tranquillity of the setting is lovely. The path winds up through the garden to the galleries and a small cafe. The exhibition we saw had a powerful emotional impact.....photographs of life for people in Palestine. The coffee in the cafe courtyard also packed a punch and there is a great view of the city. In the morning we had visited the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, which was good but the atmosphere here was so much more vibrant. If you only have time for one gallery make it this one.
