Mälaren may be Sweden's third-largest freshwater lake, but with all the islands, peninsulas, channels and bays there is hardly ever a big expanse of water to be seen. Stockholm itself is on Lake Mälaren, but also not far from the sea. Thus I travelled from Stockholm by ferry to the Aland islands in the Baltic Sea, but I also took a boat from that city to Drottningholm, further west on Lake Mälaren. On both trips it was fun to look out over the water to the coastal scenery. Sometimes there were just smooth granite rocks and trees to be seen, then 'Stuba' (Swedish summerhouses) and on a sunny day in July a lot of small boats, watersports and sunbathing at beaches.

My 11yo son and I followed Bohusleden to and through Delsjön Nature Reserve. What a beautiful area. There are many seperate trails that can be followed, as well as Bohusleden. The main paths are well marked and even surfaced. There are countless places to sit and ejoy the review around the lake, or to take swim and cool off. There is even a beach area and a wonderful place to fika (Kaffestugan Lyckan). In this same area you will also find bathrooms, fresh water and places to rent a canoe, or go fishing. There are several rest areas around the lake where you can have a picnic. This area is great for anyone who wants to be out for just a short walk, or spend the day.

Welcome to Göta Canal, one of Sweden's largest constructions and visitor destinations. Lock your own pleasure boat through the magnificent landscape, join one of the passenger boats or book one of all bicycle packages along the canal. Stay by the waterfront at hotels, youth hostels, motorhome spaces or campsites. Dine in restaurants or have a traditional Swedish fika at one of the cafes. The fairway is open from May to September but you can visit Göta Canal all year round.

There is something magical about the Dalsland canal and it is not only the surrounding stunningly beautiful nature that will enthrall you. The most astonishing thing is that although it takes you between Vänern and the mysterious Lake Stora Lee in northern Dalsland the canal itself is only a few kilometers long. The secret lies in Dalsland’s unusual topography. The last ice age created many long deep rift lakes and made Dalsland Sweden’s most lake-rich landscape. Making good use of these, only 12 km of the 250 km stretch of the canal system had to be dug or dynamited to link up these deep, clear lakes to a single waterway.
Trent a boat or join one of the tour boats. Experience the old locks and enjoy the magnificent nature.
