Our group of 15 climbed up to the summit of Mt Paektu in mid September, and we were the only ones there! Our bus took us as far as the cable car station that takes you down to the shore of Lake Chon ("the lake of heaven"). it was not running as there was no electricity available. We climbed up to the top of Mt Paektu, which is at 2750 M. We were told to wear warm clothes, but when we got there, the weather was warm and sunny, There is a huge sign on the outside of the mountain with letters reading "Holy mountain of the revolution". The funicular was also not working, but the view from the top was quite beautiful. There is a guard rail all the way up until you almost get to the summit, where you must cross over the rail and climb up the extra 10 m. There was a guard at the top and only permitted a few in our group to climb to the top then stopped the rest of us because he felt is was too dangerous. We could see the Chinese station on the other side of the caudera. Well worth the trip to be able to claim that you were at the highest point on the Korean Peninsular.
