My two night stay at this hotel, with regular dips in their delightful hot spring bath, significantly diminished the knee pain I am experiencing from a torn meniscus. Equally important, the hotel was very comfortable, with airy, spacious rooms. In addition to the welcome sweet provided in the room, an onigiri rice ball was served in the evening upon my return to the hotel (due to other social commitments, I did not have dinner at the hotel). The Japanese-style breakfast was served in private dining suites off the hotel lobby, with separate coffee service available after breakfast. The only negative I could report was that getting on the wifi in the evenings was difficult. They need a bigger "pipe".

Just getting to this onsen hotel deep in the Yonezawa mountains was an experience, arriving at an unmanned train station to be met by a little van that carried us up a steep and winding road to the hotel, which sits next to a cool little waterfall. The hotel is a typical labyrinth like many onsen hotels, with amazing wood flooring. Welcome was extended by the resident cat, fat and shiny. My room was in the newest wing, a comfortable two room suite with views of the waterfall. Meals were served in rooms and featured lots of local seasonal delicacies; a real treat! There are three baths to choose from, including an outdoor "stone" bath, an outdoor cedar bath and an indoor bath. The stone bath is a bit of a walk upstream and has scheduled times for use by men or women. A sign is posted to tell guests which gender is permitted at any point in time. The cedar bath is usually mixed bathing but can be reserved for private use. There is one indoor bath for women only and a larger one that is mixed bathing. It can be a bit complicated to figure out and one of my companions got a bit of a rude surprise. Because of the hotel's remote location, there was limited mobile phone service and the hotel's wifi was also a bit weak. Of course, if one is traveling to such a remote location, perhaps the point is to get away from it all. Certainly I enjoyed the chance to just chill out.

Stayed here for a couple of nights with my wife in March 2013. The ryokan is about 20 minutes drive from Yonezawa station, and if you come in the snowy season give yourself extra time: roads are narrow and hard to find. The good Stylish, comfortable building Impeccable service Intimate feel: only seven rooms Two private baths as well as the communal men and women's baths Incredible food (if you like beef) The bad The heating isn't ideal (AC based) Very limited dining and breakfast times 18:30-19:00, 8:30-9:00 A little pricey *the cheapest room (Azuma) is very noisy, as all the AC units for the building are on the wall outside -avoid if possible Trains run by nearby (only about one an hour) Overall This is a great, relaxing ryokan with fantastic food -well worth seeking out as long as you avoid the noisy room. Turn up as early as possible and enjoy the silence.

This is about the most remote onsen we have visited. The train service to Toge where the ryokan has a pickup service at 1340hrs is infrequent. From Toge it is a 35+mins mini-bus ride up a steep and narrow single lane mountain road; at one hairpin turn, the mini-bus had to make a 3 point turn to negotiate it! On arrival, we crossed a suspension footbridge and then walked up a steep path to arrive at the ryokan. So don't bring heavy and bulky luggage. The ryokan is modern, rebuilt in 2004, and is wedged high up in a ravine, with the rotenburos located further up. Rooms are large with attached toilet and TV but no wifi. The mixed rotenburo has a good view of the mountain side and you may spot the occasional mountain goat. As it was late May, the inspects were starting to be pesky. So visit in April when the ryokan opens or in Autumn before it closes in Nov. Water quality is acidic with sulphur suspension; is hot and fed once thru from a spring with no recycling. There is a mixed rotenburo and gender separated ones too. There are also gender separated indoor baths where the showers are located. Dinner was good, especially the grilled beef. Despite its remoteness, there were large number of day trippers.

My new (in 1994) Japanese bride and I were touring North Honshu inWinter and planned to stay at Nishiya for skiing. On our way up the mountain in snowy conditions, my car slid off the road and was disabled about halfway up. We didn't have mobile phones in those days, so passers-by were kind enough to help us contact the ryokan and its owner, who came down the mountain personally in the hotel van to bring us up. He then arranged a tow-vehicle to a local repair shop and made us very welcome in his 700 year old inn. We have been back on several occasions over the intervening years, and consider him a friend. We will be back again when chance allows, and relish the possibility. Highly recommended for the hospitality, food, atmosphere, genuine hot spring, and proximity to great skiing.

初の山形で小野川温泉に宿泊。こじんまりした旅館で静かに過ごすことができました。温泉の雰囲気も良く夕食の米沢牛の、すき焼きも美味しかった。

A gem in the mountain, run by a young couple, Atashi & Miyuki. Very friendly, great hospitality, speak a little English and I do not understand Japanese either but we all have Goggle Translate. Ume serving at meal times can converse a little in English and very cheerful too. Location Shirabu Onsen, 30 min from Yonezawa station. Free shuttle service provided by Atashi, pick-up 2.30pm, return 10.00am. Rooms Very clean with river, mountain scenery. All 17 rooms are Japanese style. 10 smaller rooms with no toilets inside, use communal toilets, are cheaper but with same views and same breakfast dinner plans. Both 24 hour Hot springs with scenery. An indoor long Olympic pool with bathing facilities and an outdoor pool downstairs. Meals Delicious multiple courses tradition Japanese kaiseki dinner of sashimi, dishes of local vegetables, fish, soup, rice. I had popular Yonezawa beef on my 1st night and Shabu Shabu Yonezawa beef on my 2nd night. Japanese breakfast of salad, fish, onsen egg, vegetables, soup, ...a lot to eat too. Both dinner and breakfast menu changes daily but always have a small pot of specialty cooking on the little burner. Nearby attractions about 20 min walking distance. I walked past the road closed in winter to Shirabu Waterfall. I turned left and walked on to the gondola station and took the ride up to Tengendai Kogen ski resort where I can see the magnificent Yamagata mountains. I received a ‘Thank you’ gift from Atashi upon check out. I enjoyed my 2 night stay very much. It was very relaxing and peaceful in the mountains.
