Seaside hotel in Naruto.
We stayed in this hotel as a stopover, driving from Awaji to Shikoku. It's an onsen hotel with both Western-style beds and tatami as bedding options. There is a large carpark space behind the hotel. Breakfast provided was Japanese-style and adequate, with options for rice/porridge, juice and coffee. There are limited options for food around, and had to go into Naruto City for dinner. It was a short drive of about 10 minutes to the boats going out to the whirlpools, and 5 minutes to the Otsuka Museum of Art.

Offering beautiful views of the changing seasons in the Iya Valley, hotel Iya Onsen provides Japanese-style accommodation, natural hot spring baths and free-use bicycles. Rooms come with Free Wi-Fi, and the hotel offers a shuttle to/from JR Ooboke Station. Japanese-style hot spring hotel Iya Onsen is a 15-minute drive from the Kazura-bashi Bridge, and a 30-minute drive from Oboke-kyo Canyon. Ooboke Station is a 30-minute drive away. Elegant Japanese-style rooms overlook the valley from a seating area at the large windows. They come with a cosy tatami (woven mat) floor and Japanese futon bedding. Amenities include an LCD TV, a CD player and a mini-fridge, while bathroom facilities are shared. Guests can relax in one of Iya Onsen's spacious public hot springs, enjoy the special footbath, or take the complimentary cable car to the hot spring in the valley. The hotel houses a souvenir shop and drink vending machines. Japanese meals are served at the dining room. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, foggy morning views can be enjoyed at breakfast, while dinner may feature views of the valley in the soft glow of the setting sun.
谷底の川側にある温泉は素晴らしく日本のオリジナル温泉を感じる事が出来ました。是非、景色の良い部屋をリクエストしてください。食事は秘境ですので、あまり期待しない方が良いと思います。The hot springs on the river side of the valley bottom were wonderful and I could feel the original Japanese hot springs. If you plan to stay, you should request a room with a view. Meals are O.K., but it's an unexplored region, so you shouldn't expect too much cooking level.

The Grand is one of the many resort stye hotels around Japan that were built towards the end of the 'bubble' days of the 1990s. Regrettably some of these hotels are now closed and those that remain appear to survive on weddings, work parties and Japanese national holidays, when many Japanese take a break and go have fun. That means that outside of the main holidays, these hotels tend to have lots of rooms available at pretty low prices considering what they offer. The Grand is one of them. The hotel is located about 7km from Naruto town so if you're travelling by train, you may need to take a taxi to get here. I suspect the hotel is also serviced by a bus. Note that the hotel is a resort style hotel located where it is because of the views it has of the Onaruto bridge, which is one of the main 3 land access points to Shikoku. This means that the hotel stands alone and is not in town. There is a restaurant serving traditional Japanese menu for dinner and breakfast, so if you're not into that, stock up on some nibbles and drinks in town before coming to the hotel. The nearest convenience store, Yamazaki, is about 2 km away in the direction of Naruto town if you need to top up. So those are the logistics, what about the hotel? It was clearly a 5 star hotel in the day, and is still looking pretty good at about 4 stars. There's a very comfortable lounge looking out to sea where you can gaze, drink free coffee or soft drinks and wonder why life isn't always as good as this. We paid 12,000yen for a room that had perfect views of the Onaruto bridge and was large enough to house a family, including aunts, uncles and second cousins. We're pretty sure that it was not the standard room, but a free upgrade. As with all of these large resort hotels, they're happy to have your custom, so ask for the best room and you may receive. The best part of the hotel (if you don't mind jumping in a bath with strangers) are the onsen on the eighth and ninth floors. There are plenty of washing and bathing areas on the lower floor, as well as a sauna, but it is the view from the ninth floor outdoor bath (rotenburo) which make it special with views out to the Onaruto bridge. You could spend hours up here and, like ourselves, you may be able to sneak your camera in and get some great pictures. I should add that a camera in a Japanese bath is a big no, but some times the views and the opportunities are too great to resist and if there's nobody else there, does it matter!!?? So good that we planned just the one night here and decided to extend for another. If you're exploring all of Shikoku over a number of days, it's too far East to use as a base, but if you have time and want to kick back, this would be highly recommended.

HOTEL Highway 32 from Awa-Ikeda interchange or Otoyo cho interchange.
Hotel is just 5mins drive from Oboke station, we requested for shuttle pick up from the hotel prior to our arrival. Very large spread for the breakfast, they even provide english description and explanation of what every dish is, very meticulous. Hotel is just opposite the pleasure boat cruise and they offered a discount coupon to us when we checked in. This area is generally very quiet with not much touristy stuff around, on our first night we had to walk 30 mins to get to a local supermarket to get some food because we did not reserve the hotel's dinner. On our second night, we asked the counter if there was any convenience store nearby like 7-11 or lawsons to get our dinner, and they immediately arranged for their shuttle van to send us there and back. Very good service. So if you are planning to stay here for many nights, either you book the hotel's dinner in advance or pack your own cup noodles from other cities. The restaurant opposite the hotel closes early at 5pm. After 5pm ,the streets are pretty much empty and dark. Note that there is a onsen charge of 150 yen per person per night. We weren't aware of this when we booked the hotel through 2nd party sites and wasn't told by the staff when we checked in either. Even if you do not use the onsen, you still have to pay for the 150 yen. Thankfully it is not a big amount but I just wished the staff told us on the day we checked in so that we could have make full use of the onsen..

Great help from the two lovely sisters that run this minshuku/ryokan. Little English for directions. Know travel Japanese before you stay. Good value--Price was 7500 yen per per person including a filling Japanese breakfast and dinner which is worth about 3500-4000 yen on it’s own. Rushing stream outside the room. Very clean. No internet. Onsen indoors and 1980ish. Very clean Buses run 2 times a day. Know the schedule or rent a car if you plan to go to the East side bridges. Samurai house is a 5 km walk up a steep 1 lane road. We hitched a ride 1/2 way up. Samurai house docent serves tea and tells stories. magical experience. If you are a Journalist bring a recorder. Fun experience. Lots of hiking in this lovely, forested valley.
