Lifetime memory of the city on top of the workd

Very often people are afraid of the high altitude that may cause severe headache, nausea, short breathing, and weak spirit. However, there are some secrets that may help to avoid all these symptoms: when arrive keep quiet and talk as less as possible, walk slowly, drink a lot of water, don’t take part of any activity during first day, full rest will help to adjust the altitudes problems. It would be wise to take the Chinese herbal tablets Hong-Jing-Tian, that you may get online if not in Beijing. Just take 4 in the morning and 4 in the evening with meal for one week. When climbing up to the Potala Palace , there should be no rush, just walk slowly a few dozens of steps each time, then take a short break, ideally they one may climb up to the top by using 2 hours to reach. My wife and I followed all the “rules” and we had a sound sleep after arrived at Lhasa all the way to following morning. We enjoyed our visit to the highest palace in the world without suffering short breath not had any headache. Good hotels such as Shangri-la provides oxygen room in the lobby that is excellent fir those who needs. It’s a wonderful sacred place that will make every single visitor to feel the tranquility and nature so pure and so peaceful.

Great location with basic rooms

Reviewed By Trish K

There is no doubt that the location of this hotel is excellent. Other reviewers have mentioned it's close proximity to all the main tourist sights in Lhasa, and we were also very pleased to have so many attractions on the doorstep. However, the hotel itself is very basic and to be honest quite 'gloomy'. Our group did visit in mid-November, so it was inevitably cold weather; alas the hotel itself was also cold inside. Of the five rooms our group used, everyone had issues with the cold and in room heating system. There is no way any of our heating systems reached the 30 Celsius max temp on the screen/remote. In fairness to the hotel, they did have electric blankets on the beds which were most welcome, our stay would have been totally miserable without these. One staff member spoke good English so that was most helpful, otherwise communications is really difficult. Breakfast is basic enough but fine to start the day, particularly as there is fresh fruit and coffee. The location did make it worthwhile but one night is enough in the colder months.

Rama Kharpo is a small family style hotel in Lhasa (associated with Tibet Ctrip Travel Service), one of six hotels awarded a gold star rating. No English, no food -- wrong time of year? or maybe things have changed...

To be clear, this rating is based on English speakers looking for a homestay experience. If you are simply looking for a budget bed or if you speak Tibetan, this could still be the perfect place for you. I wanted to be sure to review this hotel here because there were a number of things I read on TripAdvisor that do not fit with the experience I ended up having. First, the big one: no one there spoke English. Not a huge deal for me normally, but the draw here seemed to be the possibility of engaging with a local family and this really wasn't possible without a common language. Actually, the family seemed hesitant to even give me a room because I was not Tibetan, so I didn't exactly have the welcomed feeling other reviewers experienced. I also thought it might be nice to have authentic Tibetan food in my hotel, but there was none to be had-- only tea was available. Those were my biggest disappointments. A couple of smaller issues that came up that I was a bit more prepared for given that it is a guesthouse and I was paying a very reasonable price: first, their stove on the ground floor is coal burning and the smoke wafts into the rooms. I was happy with the dark and cozy atmosphere described by other reviews, but there was nothing pleasant about the smokey, smelly quality of the air. Second, the toilet was Western, but effectively still a squatter because the toilet seat was the filthiest I have ever encountered in any bathroom, public or private. I can't imagine it was cleaned at any point in the last several months. And finally the hot water knob on the shower did not work, so effectively the shower had no hot water. I understand Tibetans do not need to shower frequently because of the dry air, but traveling from a semi-tropical region I really needed to soak in a shower a bit each day to get balanced and so when the hot water knob fell to floor my heart dropped with it. Part of me feels bad to leave a negative review for this place because they truly seemed hesitant to take me in, and in hindsight I suspect it was because they knew it would not be a good fit. Some of the things mentioned in other reviews are still very much there: the location is great, the atmosphere is cozy, the sheets were clean, and the electric blankets are warm. Perhaps the English speaking family members were away for the winter and perhaps food will be served again during busy months. I can see there is great potential for an amazing experience here, it just didn't work out so well for me.

Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse

Adequate

Reviewed By sidmehlwal

Solo 1-night stay in September 2019. I didn’t actually stay at the guesthouse, as I explain below, and this is a review of both, the guesthouse and the nearby tents. To get to Everest Base Camp (EBC; also Rongbuk Monastery, the guesthouse and the tents), you park your vehicle at the EBC parking lot and take a half-hour electric “Ecobus” ride to the monastery. You have to leave luggage in your vehicle, taking only an overnight bag (most people stay only overnight). The guesthouse is located across the road from Rongbuk Monastery, with the tents village next door. The latter used to be closer to EBC (and further ahead of the monastery), but was apparently relocated in 2019. There are 10 rooms at the guesthouse, and mine (No. 5) had 2 single beds with duvets and pillows on them. The linen – bedsheets, pillow and duvet covers – were all clean and freshly changed. The room also had a mirror, a set of drawers, and a small plastic bowl for use as a washbasin (note: the bowl was standalone, with no drainage). I was given a small padlock with keys, to lock the room door. The room didn’t have much of a view, and I don’t recall seeing any source of heat in the room. The guesthouse offers free WiFi and the speed is pretty good. Apparently, there is a cafeteria, although I didn’t see one. Note that there is no running water, so having a shower is out of the question. The toilets are outside, in a separate section from the one with the rooms. I’ll try and describe the toilets – there are no doors, just holes in the ground separated by a low wall. And there weren’t enough incense sticks to overcome the stench. Having read other reviews, I was mentally prepared for the worst… the reality was even bleaker!! However, things were about to get worse… There had been a mix-up, and I was apparently supposed to stay in a tent, and not at the guesthouse. So, half an hour after checking-in, I was “walked” across to the tents village next door. I don’t remember the number of the tent that we ended up in (I want to say No. 10, but can’t be sure). It was big, and divided into 4 smaller sub-sections - one where the owner & his family stayed / cooked / slept, two sleeping sections for guests, and one sitting-and-guests’-sleeping section. The latter section had a yak-dung-and-wood-fired oven for boiling water and for heat (the other sections didn’t have any source of heat). The tent owner’s wife made us really tasty noodle soup for dinner, and yak tea and porridge for breakfast. There was also plenty of hot water available to drink. The sleeping sections were all dormitory style, with adjoining camp beds - meaning you might end up spooning with a complete stranger!! Thankfully, my guide and I were the only ones in “our” section of 6 beds (I was told more people might arrive later that night but, thankfully, no one turned up). The conditions in the tent were dire – the beds were dirty, and I don’t think the sheets had been changed all season. The duvets and pillows were equally filthy. I didn’t bother to change at night, even keeping my jacket on. Plus, there was a lot of disturbance all night - sounds not only from the adjoining sections of the tent, but from nearby tents, and stray dogs barking outside. It rained/sleeted/snowed that night, and the tent had multiple leaks. The owner put pots under the leaks to collect water, but some parts of the tent “floor” were muddy puddles in the morning. It was really cold inside the tent, so at some point of the night, I stopped thinking about how dirty the duvets were, and curled up under 2 of them. I barely slept that night due to the snoring neighbours, the barking dogs, the sound of rainfall, the filthy bed, and the altitude sickness. The toilet in the tents village is a truck with holes for squatting, and it was absolutely unusable. Stepping out of the tent in the morning, we were greeted by the sight of other tourists avoiding using the filthy toilets, and heading to secluded spots behind the tent village. Enough said. In conclusion, I would strongly recommend AGAINST staying overnight at the EBC. The guesthouse is adequate, while the tent is dire, and the toilet situation in both is horrendous. Therefore, it is probably best to stay overnight in a nearby village / town, visit EBC during the day, and return to the nearby village / town. If, however, that is not an option, stay at the Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse. Insist that tour agency book you there instead of the tents – at least you’ll sleep in a clean bed.

One is happy to find a quiet and clean place at 4250 m. Our room at the Snowland Hotel as it is also called offered all that plus a bathroom with working plumbing and a shower. The bed was especially hard but a towel helped to protect the hip bones. The room even had a no smoking sign. Wifi was working for email but nothing else. Our accommodation was in the new wing. Good for a one night stay.
