Only real-deal surfers should brave the torrid waters of Puerta Viejo de Talamanca, known both for their beauty and for their dangerously strong riptides. Surf’s especially up at Salsa Brava and Playa Cocles. Not to fear—the rest of you water bugs can enjoy snorkeling, kayaking and diving in the calmer waters of Cahuita or Manzanillo. Rent a mountain bike to coast to Manzanillo for a full, fun experience.

We were in the casa del artista for 3 weeks in the middle of the jungle. The house is very beautiful and the nature surroundings breathtaking. We’ve seen many animals including a sloth climbing a tree right next to the house. Since the house is in the jungle animals are permanent guests in and outside the house for us a perfect way to feel more comfy with them? The house is completely covered in mosquito nets though so don’t be scared. The owners are so hearthwarmy and lovingly nice people and the breakfast they make is a must have in a beatiful environment.

This space is so tranquil and beautiful. The way it is tucked into the rainforest makes it feel magical. The staff are so friendly, the drinks are refreshing and the food is amazing. We felt so pampered and like we were in paradise. We LOVED Awa!!

Life is at its tranquil best at Villas del Caribe. The days go something like this: You wake to the sound of bird songs and a view from your bed of silvery palms and clear blue sea. You throw open the sliding doors and take to the hammock on the balcony for a little rest, refreshed by the ocean breeze. You may now be ready to take a dip in our swimming pool and enjoy the elevated thatched Jacuzzi for a relaxing massage.Once the lure of the sea becomes too much, you wander through the landscaped gardens onto the beach path, where you face a decision between the long, deserted golden sand beach to the left or the many pristine golden sand beaches to the right. You settle for one of the shallow, sandy natural lagoons formed by the coral reef right offshore, and watch tropical fish wiggle past your toes. After a fresh water shower on your terrace, you walk over to the SeaSide Restaurant for breakfast or a snack, then you take a bike and cycle down the flat paved road past fields, forest, a few thatched bars and restaurants to Puerto Viejo for coffee or a drink, the local gossip, and some good, fresh fish at the beachfront store. You spend the afternoon alternating between the beach and the sea, the loungers on the terrace, and the hammocks on the balcony.
We had a sea-side villa. We loved how spacious it was with fully equiped kitchen and living area with terrasse with two bedrooms and balcony upstaits, 50 m from the sea, across from thr Jaguar Rescue Center. The room had seen some years and nothing was brand new, but clean and in working order. Location was good as we had a car, central to go to various beaches. Breakfast at the hotel restaurant was nuce but there was no bar open in the evening for a drink.

South of the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, 8 kilometers from Puerto Viejo, within the “Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge,” Charlène & Joshua welcome you, 200 meters from the wonderful Punta Uva beach, in their lush tropical garden at the edge of a river. Punta Uva beaches, ideal for swimming and all very beautiful are located 200 meters from Pachamama, at the mouth of Rio Ernesto, our jungle river. Enjoy the beauty and tranquility of tropical nature, while still being steps or paddles from the beach and close to local restaurants and activities.
First, they charged us for holiday week when the holiday is 10 days away. For the money, you can get MUCH better places closer to the town and activities. They do not include breakfast or coffee. This is a basic camp - bare minimum accommodations. I would not recommend.

This is an interesting and unique place to stay. We were there for 2 nights and appreciated the Tibetan character of the cabina, the many statues and flora on the grounds, and just the warm and comfortable vibe. The cabina was in the Tibetan style, simple but very comfortable. The location is great…about a mile from the craziness of puerto viejo, but close enough to get there quickly. Beach right across the street. Breakfast was simple but still very nice. Service was excellent. I would like to single out Augustin at the front desk. He was amazing. Warm, engaging, thoroughly wanting to please us and he clearly went above and beyond to do so. Just a really sweet and nice person. We would definitely stay there and highly recommend the hotel. Also the cabinas, which I recommend, made the experience not feel like a “hotel.”

Rooms: Wonderful, Breakfast: Delicious, Hotel overall: The Best!! I stayed here about a year ago during February and when I was there, there were two very helpful boys. One I believe was the son of the owner and the other as well, or just a friend, I'm not sure. The owners also very kind. But the 2 boys were awesome to say the least.

My wife and I enjoyed an 11 night stay at RNV; it was amazing. Puerto Viejo itself takes a bit of an effort to get too, but is is so, so worth it. Not wanting to make the 6 hour drive from San Jose; we choose to fly Sansa the Costa Rican airline, to the Limon Airport, about an hour away from PV. Christian, the RNV property owner arranged both our arrival and departure transfers from the airport for US$50 one way. Upon arrival; Christian was there to meet us for a quick check in process. He showed us our chalet; and brought us a refreshing fresh fruit juice after we had arranged our things. The Chalet's are set back from the main road; down a jungle path; safe and secure. The rainforest vegetation has been landscaped around the chalets to ensure your privacy. He has even added an insect repelling plant around your chalet to keep the mosquitoes away. The Chalet's are wooden, open and spacious. The bathroom is huge for a lodging in Central or South America, with plenty of hot water.A full kingsized bed, with amazing linen combined with the silence of the jungle made for the best night's sleep we've enjoyed in ages. The deck of the Chalet boasts 2 hammocks; 2 chairs and a rustic wooden table. Christian always made sure he brought us coffee every afternoon when we returned from the beach or daily adventure, which we always enjoyed on the deck. There is plenty of storage space in the room, and a small fridge to keep your beverages cold. NOTE: I was worried about the lack of air conditioning; I'm someone who cranks the hotel air to 62 degrees to sleep. But we found that even when it is very hot in Costa Rica, the ceiling fan still allows for a great night sleep. The nights when it rains is a real treat, as you get the cooling breezes and the sound of the rain hitting the metal roof....heaven. We only had one evening without rain; the days were rainless. You are awakened by the jungle birds, howler monkeys and if you peek out; on some mornings local wildlife. Walk down the path to the breakfast area and Christian will be there greeting all the guests with his infectious laugh; something we miss already. Breakfast is made to order and a place where you meet some of the other guests and can get some good ideas for the days plans. We meet nice folks from around the world; and enjoyed the breakfast banter. Start with the amazing local coffee; then you get a bowl of fruit and a choice of natural fruit juice. I was a sucker for the banana and papaya. You can then order from a limited, but fresh main dish menu. The omelets were very good; and one morning they had pancakes available. Probably the best thing though was the toast made from homemade bread served with natural jams; our go to was the guava. The location is perfect. You are a 5 minute walk from Cocles Beach, where a cool jungle river collides with the warm Carribean. There is a first class grocery store just steps away; clean and modern. And 2 wonderful places to eat lunch or dinner; La Nena (have the Carribean chicken!) and the Rio Negro Cafe offer amazing mixed drinks, beer list and local plates! We rented a car for a few days to see the National Parks; Adobe Car Rental in Puerto Viejo offered fair rates and great service. But when we didn't have a car, we used the Tuk-Tuks for the short drive into town; or to play on Chiquita Beach, just down. the road. Plenty of great places to eat in the area, but don't miss The Spicy Coconut, Como en la Gloria, or Gypsies. All places offer great Vegan options as well. We REALLY, REALLY, hated to leave. I joked with Christian that we were disappointed that our Covid tests to return to the US came back negative, as 15 days in quarantine there would have been awesome. We will miss the beautiful property; but mostly we will miss Christian, Luis and the amazing staff.

Very clean, good air conditioning and hot water. Convenient location to walk to downtown. Price was high for what it is. Reception was no help in phoning San Jose for an onward reservation despite several requests. The young lady ar reception that I had asked never followed up on my requests despite me gifting her the used $60 cellphone and prepaid Sim card purchased in Costa Rica that I couldn't figure out how to use.

I first found out about this place upon my first visit to Puerto Viejo (CR), when with a Tico friend who, when I asked where we were staying, he said, 'we'll find a place'... well, everything was booked and we looked all over town and found adequate lodging for that night. Next day, on to the hunt for a nice place for little money. We found places that were twice as nice for 3X the price, upwards of $100. US. We stumbled upon this place $40.US in 2005. Have stayed here 3X since and it has become part of our love of this little village (well, getting bigger every year). Smart, tri-lingual owners and $50.US/night. The place is clean (approved by my very fussy GF), quiet and comfortable. It is two short blocks to the beach/restaurants/bars/mercado and is secure, well staffed, coffee and bananas every morning (free), and the owner Rolf is a botanist, so the plantings are unique, varied and 'authentic'. Great patios, beds and housekeeping. If you're 'upscale', maybe this isn't a place for you, as it is not a Marriott or a Hilton. It is a mom and pop place of about 10 units where the owners are all about details. (Lovely Juana, and articulate Rolf). Room 2 has three queen beds, two levels and two patios (lanais). Very few mosquitoes, no noise from busy main street and a great restaurant /bar just around the corner (aptly named 'The Hangover') A larger mercado (grocery store) is located a block further. The beach is two short blocks away and there's a great bakery about 4 blocks away. (ask Juana). If you're couple, this is THE place for a romantic getaway. It has been for us 4X. Enjoy your stay....
