I stayed at La Casa de Don David in 1995, and it was an awesome place to stay while visiting Tikal. It's away from the chaos of Flores, and close to the ruins. I'm so happy to see that it is still going strong!

Realizing the tourist industry in Guatemala is very slow due to the corona virus, it doesn't mean that this hotel should not keep up basic upkeeping! There were 2 other people staying, 'being busy' was not the reason to leave garbage, rags, be aloof, lack of choices on the menus, etc. We were throughly disappointed with this property. The web site shows a poo, there is NO pool, the other 2 hotels do!! The room was comfortable, clean and basic. We are not picky individuals as long as the room is clean, we're happy! There was always 2, 3 staff on ... why not pick up the mask and as you can see, it wasn't a fresh one, it, along with the rags, garbage were there the 3 days 2 nights ww were there?? Not a big deal really, food ... 3 choices for breakfast, 2 choices for dinner, 1 piece of papaya was served with dinner. Embarrassing. We asked staff to put all the fans on for the sheer heat & humidity, not possible and it wasn't due to lack of electricity. Okay. The one amazing thing our awesome guide Hendry for the Sunrise Tour! It's worth every penny. The hotel staff was ignorant and rude, which I must say was the 1st time we encountered this travelling for 6 wks in Guatemala. There are 2 other hotels in the park, I highly suggest checking them out. We had dinner at the Jungle Lodge Hotel ... outstanding! The food, service, pool, grounds, lit up, warm inviting lobby, etc., beautiful. It was very sad walking back to out dismal hotel. Lastly the pictures on this site of the hotel are NOT up to date!!!

Posada del Cerro

Palms, stones and local woods form the houses of the Posada del Cerro which you find directly at the entrance to the protected area "Biotopo Cerro Cahui".The design of the buildings merges harmonically into the subtropical ambience of the lake Petén Itzá which is spreading out in front of the Posada del Cerro. Good and personal service as well as excellent food round up the attraction of this small Hotel. The Hotel has enough space to accommodate up to 34 people.

An Oasis from Omnicron for a Family of Four...

My wife, 11 and 13 yea-olds, I really enjoyed our December 2021 visit to Posada del Cerro. From my first interactions with him on WhatsApp, Ricard Busquets, the manager of del Cerro was organized, gracious, and helpful. We opted for the three-bed apartment in the lodge, so we could prepare lunches and breakfasts for ourselves. Sitting on the apartment’s deck at night, listening to the (loud) insect sounds of the forest was wonderful. The apartment was basically furnished and, while you wouldn’t want to cook up a seven-course dinner, the apartment’s kitchen was sufficient; we found going up to the main kitchen/dining area 25 meters away to get another plate (or a bit of sugar) was super easy. The kitchen staff will provide jugs of drinking water for your use upon request. Dinners at del Cerro were limited to 2-3 choices (always a vegetarian option) and given the limited number of tables/seats, you needed to make a reservation for dinner by late afternoon. Despite this, dinners at del Cerro’s restaurant were surprisingly tasty and the proportions larger than expected. As was our experience with other lodging in Guatemala, COVID protocols were integrated into all operations in terms of cleaning & spacing of tables. Ricard and his staff always wore masks; guests wore them as well, though this is a social expectation, not a demand. Right across the road from the hotel is a grassy area from which we all swam in the (very-warm) lake. Finally, a stay at del Cerro is money well spent. All told, we really enjoyed our six nights at Posada del Cerro.

Zapote Tree Inn

We are an inn located in the village of San Miguel, across the lake Peten Itza. Here you will find the lush green of the tropical rain forest, a wealth of historical and archaeological knowledge, and the beautiful culture of San Miguel and its surrounding villages. Our name derives from the love that we have for our Zapote tree, and that is why we built our inn around it. At Zapote Tree Inn, we can offer you a beautiful scenery as we have a beautiful view of the lake and the island of Flores. You can dip in the pool and enjoy the nature that surrounds you. We have many exotic tropical fruits, and if they are in season, you will have the chance to try them. The best of Zapote Tree Inn is not only the establishment, but also its location in San Miguel, Peten. At Zapote Tree Inn, not only are we within walking distance but we are also the closest establishment to: El Mirador of King Canek which is a high point with a 360-degree view that allows you to see the lake, nature, many different kinds of birds, archaeology, all surrounding towns like Santa Elena, San Benito, San Jose, San Andres, San Miguel, the island of Flores, the island of Lepet, the radio station, the zoo, and if lucky you might get to see the family of howler monkeys that reside in the area. This mirador is highly recommended for sunsets. There is also another mirador, a second one that even though it does not possess a 360-degree view, it does have however a very nice view for sunrises. The running trails are very close to the inn, at approximately 3 minutes walking. They are clean inside as we volunteered ourselves every few days to pick up the trash. They are within nature, so running shoes for soil and not asphalt are required. Within the running trails you will find the Tree of Love, which usually has some toucans, parrots or some other birds around. Sometimes the howler monkeys are there if you like running in the early morning. The running trails also take you to the Mayan stelae which are at the main plaza. San Miguel is a town that resides in the peninsula of Tayasal, and it is around an unexcavated Mayan city. If you wish to see how the temples, and buildings look like before they are excavated, then the running trails will take you on a loop where you can witness this for yourself. We are about 20 minutes walking from the beach Chechenal, which has crystal clear water and a really nice temperature. The place is very clean, has bungalows, a dock from which to jump into the water, changing stations and toilet services. They charge Q5 to enter, which is less than $1. You can either walk there, or take a boat if you prefer. We are also within walking distance of: The horse of stone which tells the story of one of our most famous legends. It is located in the center of San Miguel, which is about 5 minutes walking from the inn. We can tell you the legend when you arrive. The museum is about 15 minutes walking from the inn as it is in the opposite side of San Miguel. There you can see many different Mayan artifacts and you can receive a very good explanation from the museum guides. Zapote Tree Inn can be reached by either a boat or a car. The car route can take up to 45 minutes, while the boat only takes 5 minutes to the island of Flores. We recommend the boat ride, over the car ride. Even if you do come in car, then leave the car at Flores, and take the boat across. The boat ride is very short and will be more convenient for your schedule if you are saving time. Plus, boats are fun! The communal boats can be taken at the north side of the island of Flores, and they charge Q5 to cross tourists, which is less than $1. They run from 5 am till 10 pm during weekdays, and till 2 am on weekends. If you need to arrive earlier or leave at a later time, then we can arrange to cross you on our own boat so transportation is never a problem. The places that can be reached by walking, are many, but we also are located close to the island of Flores. A 5 minute boat ride and you can walk the streets of Flores, and come back to enjoy the quiet side of the lake during nighttime. If you want to have a nice time, enjoy the pool with a nice view, take in the nature and appreciate archaeology then come to Zapote Tree Inn. As your hosts we will do our best to give you the best possible time in your stay. We will explain you everything we know of the surroundings. We offer double rooms with a queen and a single bed with private bathrooms, as well as the option of traveler beds for those that travel on a budget. We involve ourselves in community development and promote ecological friendly tourism.

Amazing family style b&b near the jungle

Reviewed By Charlie C

Zapote Tree is the perfect type of place, it is very easily accessible from the main island of Flores by a quick and cheap boat ride. The owners Peter and Yolanda are extremely kind and warm people and arranged everything for me to get there and reach my flight out. Eric who also works there is also a great cook and makes one mean breakfast perfect before trekking out to the jungle or the ruins of Tikal for a long day of walking and climbing. Peter in particular went out of his way to make sure my stay was perfect and that I was taking advantage of all that Flores had to offer. He also has a great personality and you can tell he and everyone else working there take pride in their business and the space. The hotel is also walkable from a beautiful beach and has a nice hiking area right behind it up a hill. Two minutes walking and you are literally in the jungle with howler monkeys walking on the remnants of an old Mayan city. You cant get that anywhere else.

Best place in town comes at a price

Reviewed By ForeignObserver2

Hotel Maya Internacional is basically your only decent option in town. The hotel has an open air lobby and a nice open air restaurant with lake views. The rooms have a nice large bathroom with sink and shower and a large mirror. The room itself contains two double beds that are okay but not exactly comfortable as the “head board”is made up of three branches that do not allow one to comfortably lean against when reading. Extra pillows would improve comfort somewhat. Our room had a balcony with two wire chairs that faced the lake which was a nice touch as there is quite a bit of bird life on the lake. The balcony is sealed off by glass doors inside a metal frame. While this made the room bright it also turned out to be a nuisance. The metal door had some lateral movement which meant that whenever there was some wind the window panes rattled. The WiFi was more miss than hit. We stayed for three days/nights and for 2 1/2 of them the WiFi was very poor. Never ask the hotel to call a taxi for you as that simply doubles your price. They appear to pocket a 50% commission from the drivers. Our rate included breakfast which was pretty good and came with eggs, toast, orange marmalade, beans and the choice of tea or coffee. Overall this place is over-priced for what you get. Anywhere else the hotel would only be able to charge half of what they do charge but given the remote location they just do not have any decent competition. Staff is very friendly, polite and efficient.

Lovely spot, shame about the noise

Lovely hotel on the lake, shame about the noise. The people are great! The nightclub across the street goes until 1 AM and is VERY LOUD. The view of the lake is beautiful, the rooms clean, the staff friendly and helpful. The open air structure makes the upper floors worse than the lower as it’s directly across from the nightclub. Maybe the noice is only in the weekend best to ask and confirm - we were here on a Friday night.

Be aware you absolutely need to know minimum Spanish or at least have a translator app because no one on site or in this town can speak a word of English. Not that speaking another language should be expected but it is definitely worth making a note of from a tourist's perspective. When we tried to check in there was no record of our booking, luckily we had a screenshot of our reservation and after that we were shown to our room. The room was very simple but with air conditioning. The wifi was very spotty and we had no electricity for about 3 hours the next day. There is a small shop where you can refill your water for free and grab snacks as well as a restaurant on site which served free breakfast to guests of the hotel. There is a good restaurant next door called El Arbol which is nice for lunch. Staff were not the most friendly, maybe because they were annoyed that we can't speak their language? In hind sight we should've probably stayed in Flores where there is a little more going on but if you are looking for a quiet place and can speak Spanish with confidence this place will be fine for you. El Remate is a little bit closer to Tikal which was our reason to stay here.

Hotel Sabana

Northern end of the island

Quiet in the chaos

Reviewed By Glacier1998

We spent several nights in Hotel Sabana, actually extended our stay. The hotel is close to dining and activities, but away from the noise, traffic and loud music that is so common in Flores. The island is very small, nothing is far! Our room was clean and bright. We were at the end of the hallway and had several windows. Lots of light. The bathroom was small but the shower worked well and there was hot water. The wifi worked in our room most of the time. This is not the place for you if you have mobility issues. There are lots of stairs and no elevator. This is true for most of Guatemala. It’s not very accessible in some ways. The staff do not speak English, again, not unusual for this area. They did patiently tolerate my mangled Spanish and we were able to communicate. The pool area is nice, but it is cold! My hubby and I were the only ones who used it during our stay! I will stay here again if I return to Flores.
