My stay at the Takahan Ryokan was wonderful thanks to the welcoming staff, classic room layout and view, and history of the property. I arrived at Gala Yuzawa Station a little before the official check-in time (3:00 pm) but was still picked up within five minutes after calling. The staff member on the phone spoke good English, as did the two staff members - both non-Japanese - who welcomed me at the hotel. Everyone was patient and went out of their way to help me and answer questions. One staff member led me up to my room on the fifth floor of the hotel, showing me the entrance to the baths from the hot spring presumably under the property and the room Kawabata Yasunari wrote "Snow Country" in, both on the first floor, along the way. I was really happy with the room, which was quite large by Japanese standards and had a great view. As another reviewer noted, the amenities in the room are dated, but I thought that just added to the charm. As a fan of Kawabata Yasunari, I really enjoyed the history of the place and the chance to look out on the town from the same vantage point he described in his novel. The comfortable seating - with tea set - on the room's balcony/veranda made this especially enjoyable to do. Overall, my stay at the Takahan was one of the most memorable and enjoyable I've had. Highly recommended.

Once we arrived the hotel, they offered a welcome drinks and snack to each of our family members. They keep a high hygiene standard that all guests need to change their shoes to thier slippers started from you entered the lobby, they will keep your shoes at the lobby until you are going to leave. The room is clean and in new status which is very comfortable. We ordered the room with dinner and breakfast, the food standard and their service quality are very nice. Moreover, both of the meal were not buffet style and is Japanese cusin. We only did not satisfy the size of the public onsen area, it is not big enough actually.

We were recommend by a local and are glad we tried. Good- Beautiful old hotel in a beautiful setting Room is modern and comfortable (we stayed in Keiryukan, a newer part) 2 Private baths which you can see the river Meals are not overwhelming, but elegant and quality food Didn't like- We had meals in a Japanese style room where we have to sit in a tatami. Our legs were tired and didn't feel comfortable during the meal

I've stayed here with my friends 1 night. We could have an amazing experience! Took about 1 hour from Echigo Yuzawa st, the winter snow view from the pick up bus amazed us! Staff there was very friendly and we could have some fresh sasimi, local soba noodle, boiled crabs offered by all-you-can-eat style. We flew the sky lantern up at 18:00. It was one of the most memorable experiences for me!! the lanterns flew high up in the sky... it was very pretty and reminds me a Disney movie the attractions of the hotel is not only this winter season, we can enjoy four seasons with the charm of beautiful nature! I hope I can bring my friends and family someday!!

Just stop by for outdoor bath only. 500yes per person. There’s an option to stay in room for 4 hrs for 5000yen. Outdoor private bath was completely outdoor and there’s no room to sit down or lounge after the bath. Small changing room only. But bath was kakenagashi (continuous flowing hot water) and beautiful views of snow. Owner of the hotel was very friendly and nice. Just steps from station and great place to stop for bath.

- the whole building is converted from ancient house and left a lot of ancient deco element - room is much bigger than mosy of the same class - extremely convenience (right opp the train stn) - very nice food and western deco restaurant - professional japanese style service by staff - has a lift so no worries on luggages - the onsen is the only thing a bit disappointing, its very small and wpuld definitely need some brush up

This was the only traditional inn we stayed for our whole Japan trip. We stayed 2 nights and opted the most expensive room with a private onsen. We had a nagging feeling that the male server assigned to our room, didn't like children. Our 2 boys are the average noisy asian kids so that was quite the bummer. Everything else about this stay, though, was wonderful. We entered a private entrance to a corridor for 3 different rooms. We were ushered into our room, which opens up to the shoe cabinet where we left our shoes and exchanged it for bedroom slippers. Bathroom with sink, bath & shower is separated from the Toilet. There is a separate entrance to our living space, with tatami mats and a central table where we sit & sleep. Beds are made by our servers every evening and kept every morning. The private onsen is the bomb of the whole stay. It is so private and felt so exclusive. It was very cold, washing in the cold air but when we enter into the onsen, it was so relaxing, watching the snow mountains during sunrise or sunset is really the experience of a lifetime. Traditional kaiseki breakfast and dinners are served and I could see how much care was put into the painstaking process of preparing for our meals. 1 catch though is that there isn't any other restaurant options so if you stay here, you'd better order all your meals or have separate arrangement to eat elsewhere. The hotel was nice enough to get us to a nearby restaurant and picked us up after (must be back by hotel before 8pm).
