An extensive waterfront regeneration and the addition of the V&A Museum to the banks of the River Tay has spruced up Dundee considerably, but it hasn't gone to Dundonians' heads. With plenty of wit and character, the locals are some of the friendliest in the UK.

The Shaftesbury is situated in the quiet west-end of Dundee. It is ideally located, close to the vibrant city centre, Dundee University, Ninewells Hospital, Dundee airport, Dundee Botanic Garden,BMI Fernbrae Hospital and the Riverside Technology Park. Only 5 minutes walk to the West Park Conference Centre. The Shaftesbury is run by Heather and Martin offering a warm welcome, great breakfasts, clean and comfortable accommodation, making your stay perfect and enjoyable when visiting Dundee.
The hotel has new owners. The breakfast choice had continental and cooked options. You can also order evening meals. It is in a very quiet area and about 20 walk to the centre of town. However, Perth Road has a lot of restaurants which is only 5 mins walk. Wifi fine.T he property is in need of some refurbishment and may look a bit tired to some. Bathrooms also needs some modernisation but quite adequate. It is excellent value for money.

Taypark House is an elegant Category B Listed former Scots Baronial mansion house dating from circa 1863. It stands nestled away in Dundee's affluent Westend Perth Road area within stunning mature garden grounds which slope from north to south and has outstanding views across the Botanical Gardens towards the River Tay and hills of Fife. The property has recently been sympathetically restored to it's former glory and now boasts 4 master suites all with huge ensuite bathrooms tastefully fitted out in a Victorian style sanitrywear including a luxurious free standing roll top bath complimented with a separate large shower enclosure. There are an additional 2 more modern rooms on the 2nd floor which take full advantage of the 180 degree uninterrupted panoramic views. If you're looking for quality accommodation and a taste of real history with an insight into a Jute Barron's life then Taypark House welcomes you as lord of the manor for the night, weekend or month! With fresh, clean, spacious rooms; friendly staff and delightful period features it's the perfect place to relax, unwind or be inspired. A little history Taypark House was originally built as an impressive home for Alexander Low, flax spinner, of Hillbank Works. It was one of many such mansions and manor houses built for the prosperous flax spinners and jute manufacturers of Dundee's industrial heyday in the nineteenth century and no expense was spared on the interior with the outstanding ornate ceilings and cornice, elaborate white and black marble fireplaces and sandstone stained glass window all still intact. The visitor's first glimpse of Tay Park House, arriving down the winding driveway through grounds is of romantic turrets and elegant decorative carvings, crow-stepped gabling and ornamented parapets, and an entrance doorway decorated with Corinthian columns.
On a positive note Taypark House is in a good location for accessing amenities, it’s in lovely grounds, it’s reasonably comfortable and the staff are all very friendly. On a more negative note, our room had no bath plug, the carpet had a burn mark, a table was very badly marked, a blind was missing, a curtain finial missing and we couldn’t open the windows. A lunch order went wrong but worst of all was a very serious issue with our evening meal. The hotel were full of apologies and we weren’t charged. Would we go back? I don’t think so.

This hotel has refused to refund a booking cancellation due to family illness. Despite many messages and e mails, they have not responded. Dreadful service. My booking is the weekend of the Open so there is little chance of them not filling the room, despite this, they have made no offer to this effect. Please avoid and do not use their booking.com profile

Environment: We are 100% LED lit and have stuff like free reusable bags, in-house recycling for your use. We are also zero waste to our best & offer you to build your own breakfast if our full plates (Scottish style) is too much. We also have lighter alternatives like pancakes and vegan toasties that can help save the world a bit more... Look out for our AabalGreen notices! We'll like to greet you personally for check-in but also offer self check-in if you're arriving at funny 'o' clock or prefer for physical distancing. All others beds are on the same level as toilets/showers. A unique building, creative decor and only good vibes. We look forward to to meeting you Peach and Maggie #Aabalree All-bee-alreet!
We had a lovely stay at Aabarlee guest house, Peach was very welcoming and accommodating, patient and tolerant, even when we arrived with an extra unannounced guest. The guest house/hostel is basically a stairwell where each floor housed several rooms. The room decor is not my taste, mismatched furniture and a little dated but pleasant enough with all mod cons available, including tea/coffee making facilities, desk, mirror, wardrobe, sink in the room, towels available, puzzles and games for children and a table and chairs by the window. The mattress was a little hard for me but clean and I had a pleasant sleep. In the hallway there are other guests rooms all numbered and right outside our room was a shared bathroom, a shower room, a microwave and fridge with milk provided. The breakfast was delicious and very filling and there was tea/coffee, water and orange juice provided as well as cereals available and pancakes and veggie/plant based options available. Check out was a little early but we were able to leave our luggage and there are lockers available, we were handed a key and when returning to get our luggage late in the evening we posted the key through the letter box on the 1st floor, so this was brilliant and very handy. The key situation was a little frustrating though as you are only provided with one key for your whole group. I love Union street where Aabarlee guest house is located, it is a vibrant pedestrian and cycle zone, it's a colourful and relaxing vibe with wooded seating areas and lots of bars and restaurants nearby. We visited Bank bar just over from the guest house, a fun lively bar with live music. Also The Traders House is friendly and great for drinks and food and service is superb. For amenities Overgate shopping centre is near by too with shops like Primark, H&M and Debenhams. Tesco is around the corner, lots of nail bars everywhere but most importantly you are not far from the V&A, the HMS Unicorn which I love, and strolling along the high st you will come across some fantastic statues like penguins walking along the wall, the Desperate Dan, Minnie the minx and a few other great statues to admire. The guest house is also not far from the train station and Seagate bus station.

The room was filthy and covered in dust, hairs in the kettle, cups were dirty. Contacted the owner who told us the dust is because a window was open. The lamp was thick with dust and no excuse for hairs in the kettle
