Often overlooked in favor of Porto and Lisbon, Coimbra sits on the banks of the winding Mondego River. After a day spent among the city's medieval architecture and grand university buildings, it's easy to see why Coimbra was Portugal's capital for over a century.

It was very unusual hotel. The front desk person took us to our room in different building near by. They renovated very old building, something like 300 years old, to stylish hotel. Coimbra was situated on lots of hills and the hotel was on top of on of those hills. Hence, our room had great views. There’s a big jacuzzi inside of the room and we really enjoyed it. The room was beautifully decorated and had nice smart TV and small refrigerator with complimentary water bottles, iced tea and beer bottles. There’s nice thick bathrobes too. They gave us welcome cake and champagne. The hotel staff brought our breakfast in a basket each morning to our room. The staffs were very friendly and helpful. They asked us if we wanted our room cleaned when they brought our breakfast but I only asked for new towels and they brought them to us promptly. It was quite a hill to walk up from the main streets but you could take Uber and it’s inexpensive like ~ 5 euros. And since it’s old building, there’s no elevators. But the staff helped us to carry our suitcases up to our room. If they could add little counter space inside of bathroom so we could put our toiletries that would have been great. We’re pleasantly surprised how beautiful and clean our room was. If I go back to Coimbra, I would definitely stay there again.

The Hotel Mondego is the new kid on the block, and we very much enjoyed it. For starters, the location is PERFECT. The rooms are clean and smartly appointed, with a minimalist sensibility. Beds and linens are lovely, and housekeeping is great. The bathrooms are also clean and modern and EVERYTHING works perfectly, including a rain shower head with great water pressure. Breakfast is good; the presentation is not exciting, but the selection is spot-on. Staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. We highly recommend this hotel for your stay in Coimbra.

In the Republic Guest House we are pleased to welcome our guests as if they were our best friends. Whether on business or pleasure, our Guest House guarantees you the total comfort you need. Located in front of the Students Association of Coimbra, in the centre of the student activity, a few meters from the University of Coimbra, already classified by Unesco as a World Heritage Site, allows our guest to travel through the Alta de Coimbra on foot. The Republic Guest House retains a tradition of about 50 years. We receive people in our house since 1970! The upper two floors of the house have housed hundreds of college students over the years. Through the Suites Trovador and Boémia we have a view of the Students Association of Coimbra. All the Suites have exquisite decoration, romantic atmospheres, tranquility and reading space by the windows. The Suites Mondego, Saudade and Tricana are more quite, as they face to the interior patio of the house. We welcome our guests personanly!
The guest house is located near the old city within 8 min walk. Modern and renovated. Since we were a party of three we received a room with one twin bed and a comfortable bed (not a sofa bed), yet you need to climb on a ladder to reach the bed. Very comfortable and secure. The guest house is run by a charming couple that gives you all the reasons to feel at home. Always available if you need anything. Breakfast is awesome! If you ride a car, you should not face any parking problems for much of the day. We certainly recommend this property. Enjoy !

We had a really great stay at Njoy Coimbra! The manager was really friendly and we could enter our room early! To get to the hotel, we had to climb a little with our luggage, but it wasn't too far from the touristic area and the university. The rooms were really clean and beautiful! We had everything we needed! We will certainly come back!

Monte Rúbiu Guesthouse is located in the ancient street Montarroio in Coimbra, UNESCO World Heritage with strong academic traditions. The Guest house is situated in the ancient part of the city so it’s quite easy to reach downtown, to visit the old commercial streets and taste the most delicious traditional pastry, and to see one of the oldest university in Europe. We are a small house but, with a big and warm heart to receive you, our visitor.
Great service, stylish and centrally located. The owners went out of their way to give us information and help to plan our trip. We slept well, enjoyed our cute room and loved Coimbra. We were able to leave our bags at the reception to enjoy the city.

Coimbra has so much to offer. Visit the magnificent University. The Baixa has many quirky little streets with some beautiful Portuguese shops. Sometimes the students of the University play wonderful music on the street. The street is pedestrianised around 10am. Their are many local restaurants that serve authentic Portuguese dishes and some offer European choices. The architecture of the buildings, especially the churches is wonderful. The interior of the churches are beautiful, untouched by modernisation. I love going on Saturdays as sometimes people of local villages set up stalls. They dress in their National costumes and sell their homemade produce such as Breads, Cheeses, Cakes, Fruit, Flowers, Food, etc. They also sell some beautiful homemade Crafts and Jewellery. Then on one Saturday a month there is an Antique Fare in the Praca de Commerico. There is a small but unique boutique called Namib which sells beautiful Jewelery, Clothes, bags etc. Well worth a visit as the prices are so low. This might appear to be a small City but there is so much to see and do, it’s one of my favourite places to visit.

I cant believe anyone would give this place a positive review! Everything was old, musty and not clean...never again. OK for backpackers on a very low budget. That is all. Yuk. My shower door broke and they could not repair due to Easter holiday. Manager is a nice guy but I would not recommend this place
