The Pascack Historical Society recently went through a renovation to improve the displays, reduce the clutter and showcase all the beautiful artifacts at the museum. They put the displays together to show life at different times in the Pascack Valley and how we have changed our way of living over the last 200 years. They have an interesting set of artifacts displayed nicely with good signage, well-lit room that has been freshly painted, interesting stories and a very friendly dedicated staff. The best part is that it is free. It is a nice way to spend the day if you like local history and being with a staff that cares.

The Montclair Art Museum, a notable, community-based institution with an international reputation, boasts a renowned collection of American and Native American art that uniquely highlights art making in the United States over the last three hundred years. The collection includesmore than 12,000 objects: paintings, prints, original works on paper, photographs, and sculpture by American artists from the 18th century to the present, as well as traditional and contemporary Native American art and artifacts representing the cultural developments of peoples from all of the major American Indian regions. The Museum’s education programs serve a wide public and bring artists, performers, and scholars to the Museum on a regular basis. MAM’s Yard School of Art is the leading regional art school, offering a multitude of comprehensive courses for children, teens, adults, seniors, and professional artists.
Having an art background, I relish the opportunity to visit museums. Normally, Montclair is not on my radar, as I live on Long Island, but because of the current "Matisse and American Art' exhibit, we decided to do a road trip. It was well worth it. The museum appears to have a very diverse and impressive permanent collection, for a small museum, and the fact that they were able to put on this amazing Matisse show was quite a feat. I would highly recommend visiting the museum if you are in the neighborhood or the surrounding area. To be honest, I'm not sure when I will go back, as it is a trip for me, but if they continue to do high-caliber shows like the current one, I will definitely return.
