The Mokau Museum and Art Gallery highlights the rich and varied history of the region surrounding the museum as well as showcasing artists from the Waikato and Taranaki region.
This museum has a great collection of old newspapers, various household (and beyond) items (from electric dog collars to washing machines) and also displays some of the Maori history. We had an enjoyable time scanning the vast collection of newspapers (all of them available to open and read) and looking over - and reminiscing for some of us - the old household items on display. There is a nice relaxed feel to the museum and it is definitely worth the time to stop and explore.

The world is full of amazingly talented artists and designers. People that transform paints and oils, metals and woods, fabrics and clay into sculptures, jewellery, ceramics and works of art. Quirky Fox works with a carefully curated selection of New Zealand and international artists to bring these pieces of art from their studio into your home.

What a delightful unexpected find! We stopped on a wet day looking for an art fix and discovered this wonderful classy gallery with adjacent art shop and cafe. Great spot to while away some time - and the shop was a fun browse as well. We didn't try the cafe this visit but will be back. A bonus - clean loos :-) and a very helpful information centre in the same complex. Recommend.

Welcome to a place of art and ideas. Expect the unexpected at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, showing contemporary art since 1970. Exhibitions change out every four months so there's always something new to experience. It also shows work by artists whose practice is related to Len Lye's. The boutique 60-seat cinema screens international film festivals, experimental, arthouse and cult movies, as well as a New Zealand cinema, symposia and lectures. Open seven days, 10am – 5pm (+ Thursday night films), the entrance to the art gallery is on Queen St. Entry is $15. Be sure to save some time for the Govett-Brewster Shop where you can find unique gifts of books, stationery, homewares, jewellery and cool kids’ stuff.
This is an amazing building containing a magnificent collection of Len Lye’s kinetic structures. The guide was helpful in turning on these structures so that we could experience the incredible movements. If you live outside New Plymouth, you have to pay, so use your Gold Card, if you’re over 65, for a reduction.
