The Norway Building

The Norway Building was produced in 1893 at Strandheim Brug, Orkanger. The building was commissioned by the Norwegian Government for The World’s Fair in Chicago, and modeled after the stave churches of the Middle Ages. One exception: It has windows. The Norway Building stayed in USA for 122 years until it was moved back to Norway by volunteers. The best preserved building from the 1893 Fair.

This was a fabulous place. Diverse collection of furniture, ceramics, silver, clothing, and objects d' art. Huge and beautiful layout on multiple floors. They are currently running an exhibit of 125 chosen items selected by a curious assortment of 125 people - everyone from university professors and art experts to children and a museum janitor. Supposedly the 125 best items from the collection. There is a fabulous book in English that you can borrow to read detailed description of each object and maybe some additional Norwegian history or cultural points. Nice gift shop too! 110 NOK (13 dollars) entry fee.

Urnes Stave Church

Norway's oldest stave church (1130) and part of UNESCO's world heritage list since 1979. We are open from 2nd May to 30th September every year (exept 17th May, which is the Norwegian Constitution Day).

Reviewed By traveltheworld012 - Rochester, United States

Urnes is possibly the oldest and most outstanding representative of the stave churches. The church expresses in wood how structures of Romanesque architecture were designed. By the use of cylindrical columns with cubic capitals and semi-circular arches. The wood carving and sculpted decor of excellent quality on the outside includes strap-work panels and elements of Viking tradition from the 11th century which constitute the origin of the "Urnes style” also found in other parts of Scandinavia and North-Western Europe. The carvings on the northern wall are a decoration of interlaced, fighting animals. Similar carvings cover the western gable triangle of the nave and the eastern gable of the choir. The carvings are important both as outstanding artistic artifacts, and as a link between the pre-Christian Nordic culture and the Christianity of the medieval ages. Many of the Viking styled carvings originated from the the Celts in Ireland. The Urnes Stave Church has been sort of renovated over the centuries where they cut and repaired portions of the interior. One of the large main columns inside had been cut off to create a private area for the pastor. The result was that the church started to lean a bit. They then had to add squared timbers inside to stabilize the structure but it still leans a bit. It is well worthwhile to take the tour which allows you to go inside as well as learning about the transitions and changes made and the meanings of the carvings. To get to this church requires greater effort as it is not just on the side of a highway like many other stave churches. One could certainly drive from Skjolden the 30+ km but beware it is a rough road. The alternative is to go to Solvorn and take the ferry across to Ornes, then walk up the hill maybe 3/4 mile to the church. I do not advise taking a car on the ferry if you are just going to visit the church. Parking is limited at Ornes and you will have to walk a portion of it anyway. All vehicles have to be backed onto the ferry and it only holds eight. There is also a visitor center across from the church with a gift shop and more historical exhibits.

If you are in Drammen and have some time to spear, visit spiralen, you have many different paths up here, but i think the ZIC ZAK is the fastet. from the cemetery you can walk up in 19 min, or jog even faster. The wiew is good, and if you get hungry, there is a resturant at the top, but chem the opening hours before you plan to eat there. From spiralen there are a lot of different paths to continue your hiking/biking trip. And in the water some of these paths are prepped for skiing.

This is an excellent place to visit to stroll, look at the boats, see people and of course have a drink or a meal. It is highly reccomended in summer, in spring or fall when the sun is out, or even in winter to experience the cozy ambience. In summer the sun will set over the low hills to the northwest, quite late in the eveneing. So come and experience the long summer evenings like a Scandinavian. It is also buzzing for lunch. Scandinavians will jump at any excuse to sit outside in the sun! A lot of them bring friends for a "halvliter", a pint, but my husband and I usually settle for sparkling water and coca-cola, and a light meal. If you are quite young, and perhaps single, the action starts late.. after 10PM, but people of all ages go there for a drink and a meal in the early evening any day of the week. As we are an older couple, we prefer to head for home before 11, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. That is when the young crowd turn out in droves. If you are boating there are many berths, both along the quay and a little furter up where there is a little marina with many berths and shower and WC facilities. I have no idea what it costs these days.. There should be a sign or two. Someone will show up to take your money. :-) If you moor along the quay on the weekend, don't expect to have a good nights sleep. In summer that is party-time! The busiest season in Norway is medio June until medio August. In August it CAN start to be a little chilly at night .. or you can experience a Norwegian heatwave .. you never know!
