Come share the fascinating moments of America’s first family with yours at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Explore the beautiful mansion and grounds and get to know the man, the ideas and the values that founded a nation. Dive into history through action-packed theaters, fascinating exhibits and meet characters from Washington’s world. Admire the view of the peaceful Potomac, or hop on board a sightseeing cruise. It’s a place where history truly comes to life.
This was the second time we have visited Mount Vernon. While both visits were during the same time of year, both tours were completely different. A few years ago we did the Candle Light tour, but this year we decided to do a day tour which included the extra Dinner with the Washingtons tour. I would highly recommend either tour. Day or night, Mount Vernon is very worth visiting. During the Candle Light tour we were led by a tour guide, obviously by candle light around the property. Actors dressed as the Washington and servants played their parts well at each stop. During the Dinner with the Washingtons tour we were led around by a very knowledgeable tour guide who gave us an in-depth look at how the property sustained itself. Of course no matter which time you choose to go, you need to tour the house itself as well. There is a really nice, new visitor center on the property. There is a food court, shops, and various movie theaters showing short films on various topics around the Washingtons and that time period. We were able to easily get an Uber to and from Mount Vernon from Old Town Alexandria. It was quite inexpensive.

My friend and I were walking around Old Town Alexandria and bumped into this place. I love old buildings and they were showcasing an art exhibit. The exhibit was very interesting and the building was amazing. I can see this building being an amazing place to host a wedding reception as well as country dancing.

George C. Marshall's Dodona Manor is situated on 3.8 acres of gardens on the eastern end of Leesburg's Old and Historic District. The site is designated a National Historic Landmark as the residence of General George C. Marshall from 1941 until 1959. During his residency in the home, General Marshall served our nation as Chief of Staff of the Army, as Special Envoy to China, as Secretary of State, as President of the American Red Cross, and as Secretary of Defense. His career as a military officer spanned 44 years, including distinguished service in two world wars. General Marshall was the architect of the European Recovery Plan (The Marshall Plan), and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. General Marshall was described as the "Greatest American of the twentieth century" by both Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. More than 90 percent of the items in the house belonged to the Marshalls when they lived here in the 1950s.
This house is filled with the actual personal belongings of General Marshall and his family, as well as memorabilia from his accomplishments on the world stage. This gives the tours a deeper connection to visitors which is truly inspiring. The docents are well informed, dedicated to the museum, and share fascinating details of Marshall's personal life (including that of his wife). A wonderful experience which brings history to life.

If you are in Alexandria on a Saturday do not miss the Farmer's Market from 9-1. Filled with foods and crafts it is hard to leave without partaking of something wonderful - in our case fresh-picked strawberries from South Carolina!

The historic Sydenstricker Schoolhouse was built in Springfield, Fairfax County, Virginia in 1928. Once the center of education and social activities in our community, the schoolhouse now stands as a reminder of a past era, and a testament to the many generations of people that have loved, cared for and preserved the building over the years. The Sydenstricker Schoolhouse is the last remaining

We were new to using subways and went to the booth to ask for help. Mr. Maiden came out and walked us through how to read the signs and how to option our metro pass and how to use it properly. He was an excellent teacher. If you are staying in Arlington and want to take the metro into DC, don’t be nervous about starting out at this station, they were wonderful
