Prizren, in Kosovo, is a charming city of mosques and monasteries dating back to the 14th century. Happily spared (mostly) from both the "destroy the old, build the new" drive of the communists during the early years of their rule in Yugoslavia, as well as the ethnic and religious atrocities that plagued the Western Balkans in the last decade of the 20th century, Prizren has the best-preserved old town in the country so far, and is often referred to as the cultural capital of Kosovo.

Shkoder is a lively city with a nice old part. But the best is the old castle a little bit outside, up on a hill, which you can reach by car. But to enter the castle, from where you have enormous views over the rivers and lakes. At the end of the castle, a little bit hidden, there is a cosy cafe from where you can also see the great landsacpe. But don't forget to use good shoes for sightseeing.

It should be noted that the thermal springs are not hot springs. I was surprised when I felt the cool water. Also, the algae has made footing extremely slippery so be careful.
The city of Gjirokastra is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and is one of the most attractive tourist sites of the country. Perched on the eastern side of the Wide Mountain (Mali i Gjërë), the city began as a fourth century castle, which is today the greatest castle in the whole country. We did not pick Dorien Malaj as our guide in Albania; we were matched up by one of the travel industry’s many anonymous middle men—but the moment we actually met Dorien, we knew we had gotten lucky. He was quick to identify our particular interests and to adjust accordingly. Our focus in Albania was their “accursed mountains” in the north east. We expected that in getting from Dubrovnik to Albania, Montenegro would be little more than a “drive through”. However, Dorien took us on a stunning mountain route that included the two beautiful but very different towns of Kotor and Cetinje, which really put Montenegro on the map for us, an added bonus. Dorien was so well-informed and happy to share both the hard facts and the subtle cultural nuances we were observing. His interactions with local people were very interesting to observe, and his background in Psychology gave him an interesting perspective, greatly enhancing our experience. His personal interests were so varied and wide, and that made looking through his eyes very stimulating for us and made conversation very productive. There was no subject off limits—about either Albania or the US. Dorien has a nice sense of humor that seemed to match ours…so that we had lots of fun together, too. It was a very easy and open relationship.
The dramatic mountain scenery, untouched beaches and crystal clear lakes of Albania and Macedonia are in a big contrast to their lack of economic prosperity. Small, unknown and hidden in the heart of the Balkans, Macedonia and Albania offer visitors a unique blend of natural wonders, traditions, culture and hospitable people. Virgin beaches, mountains and lakes, churches and chapels, remains of ancient civilizations, breathtaking gorges and diverse wildlife are all available now to tour its willing to enjoy this round trip in two of the European countries.

I can't thank our tour guide Adam enough for giving us a fun filled day from start to finish. If you are lucky enough to get him as your tour guide you will agree with me that he is one interesting man on this planet! He went above and beyond, even making additional pit stops. He showed us so much in one day that would of easily taken us two to three days to do. The tour exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to do future day trips in other countries/cities with Albanian Express Travel and Adam!
