If you have all night to make something out of the night, go here. The food was a little above average. But the service was weird. The order was messed up, so I didn't get my food until everyone else ate. The atmosphere was lacking. A DJ with bad speakers who played Motown, sadly. It was like eating in your kitchen next to the fridge. It will make you late if you stop in before going somewhere else. It was recommended to me, but it didn't live up to the hype. The best food was an extra-large slice of cheesecake and a mountain of chocolate cake. This may have been an apology for the service.

This place is a must in your trip to Houston. It is a perfect place for a delicious dining experience. Food is great. It consists of four courses: cheese fondue, salad, entree and chocolate fondue. You choose three to four times in your entree, and you get the chance to cook your meal yourself on the table. Now, they added a new cooking option which is grill style and it was perfect for the sirloin and chicken.Every time we go we have a great experience. Although our last visit was slightly different. The service was super slow, and we spent like three hours to finish our dining experience that my daughter missed half of it because she felt asleep. The waiter was very friendly and professional . It is not really a kid friendly place especially because the table has a stove on it, but it is doable . Highly recommended.

For more than 35 years, Backstreet Cafe has been a Houston dining tradition. It has grown from a "watering hole" with soups, salads, and sandwiches to a critically acclaimed, chef-driven Seasonal American Bistro that is a top table in the city. Always inn
I loved everything I had, especially half price appetizers. I loved the PETITE LOBSTER SANDWICH, SHRIMP WRAPS, GRILLED SALMON TACO & SCALLOP CRUDO. I also ordered CHARRED BRUSSELS SPROUTS & delicious BACON-WRAPPED QUAIL, but I had them hold the jalapeno & put andouille sausage cream sauce on the side (its too spicy for me but My daughter loved the sauce). We did not like the GRILLED OCTOPUS at all (hated the tomato stew, green olives & whatever green stuff was on the sourdough bread). I should have got the braised short rib instead. It was so nice of them to add a special touch to the pecan pie birthday dessert they made for my son-in-law (it was wonderful).

First night in Houston...a little hard to find but worth it for the food. Heavy on meat----steak,chicken. Had the mixed appetizer---very good would recommend if you have not tasted the flavor palette of South African food before. Had the chicken kabob(can't remember the name and comes in beef too), wife had the chicken curry. Both were good. Not inexpensive but still a decent value. Staff is working hard to make it an experience. Decor is nice.

Not only was the food amazing so was our waiter... Mr. Purdie always made sure we had everything we needed and was very punctual but not overbearing with his visits to our table.
