Three decades and two generations of experience and passion go into every smiling face and mouth-watering bite that make-up El Chaparral. Our family history is etched into everything we do. In 1972, our parents, Charlie and Mary Garcia, followed their dre
We had not been here in some time do to lackluster service in the past. But we decided to take a relative here for breakfast after church. They are open for breakfast on Sat. and Sun. mornings. There was plenty of parking and we were seated immediately. Our waiter was cordial and the service was good. The breakfast menu is a little pricey for what you get and the food was mediocre.Breakfast for three came to just under $36 and one order only two breakfast tacos. The scrambled eggs were dry, the refried beans a bit runny and the omelet filling but not that great. This is a favorite with the locals but we just find other local Mexican restaurants that we prefer to this one even though it is convenient to our location. Thanks for bringing your family in to see us. It's disheartening to hear that we weren't able to impress you this time, especially considering you're one of the local guests that we always cherish having here. We'll take your feedback regarding our food into account and do our best to improve going forward. Hopefully, in the future, you'll give us another chance to impress you.All the best,Carlos, Owner
Where to eat Mexican food in Helotes: The Best Restaurants and Bars

I met a friend at this restaurant on a night when there were few people in the restaurant. We had a cold beer (reasonably good selection), and I decided to try a half-rack of baby back ribs with a side called vegetable medley. That was a big mistake. The baby back ribs were listed on the menu under "Smoked Meats", and that was an accurate classification. The ribs were too smoky, and I mean way to smoky. I have been eating smoked meats in Texas for 60+ years, and I have never tasted meat this smoky. The outside of the meat was overcooked and very dry and chewy, about like jerky, and the meat close to the ribs was very dry. Ribs are supposed be juicy, but endless smoking of these ribs without putting sop (mop) on the meat desiccated them and killed the tenderness that characterizes baby back ribs. A great BBQ sauce would have made chewing the dry meat more palatable, but their sauce was sickly sweet with no hint of vinegar. It was BBQ sauce for people with a sweet tooth. I ate one rib and let the server dispose of the remaining 4-5 ribs. The word medley means a "a varied mixture", but my vegetable medley consisted of slightly overcooked yellow and zucchini squash. I ate because it was my only dinner. In all fairness, it is certainly possible that many other entrees at this restaurant may be tasty and a good value. I guess that I just made a poor choice of food to order, but that is a moot point because I will never revisit this restaurant.

Food was excellent. We had beef steak tacos and brisket tacos, along with rice and baracho beans. Both tacos were excellent, but I preferred the steak tacos. I like that I can select exactly the toppings I want on my taco, with several choices of salsa and pico de gallo. I'd eat here again. We went late one evening, and every table in the back room needed to be cleared from previous patrons. Other than that, it was a great visit.

We went by for lunch on a Monday, the place wasn't busy so I figured we could get a good lunch in a timely manner...I couldn't have been more wrong. We sat for 35 minutes and received no food and a couple of drink refills. Finally walked out leaving only the $ for the drinks. We're sorry to hear about your recent experience at Chili's. We dined here in a Saturday evening, steered here by locals. There were pluses and minuses to the entire dining experience. Service was friendly, but somewhat lacking---water glasses weren't refilled, our server didn't remember who ordered what. But the food was good, and I was impressed by their empanadas. The music was loud and authentic, and somewhat invasive. There is plenty of free parking and a full bar. In a city chock full of Mexican restaurants, one could do better, but one could certainly do much worse.
