Things to do in Lancaster
Driving from Dallas to Houston with my daughter and grandkids a few days ago we really didn't want a boring, unhealthy fast food lunch. I'm so grateful for the reviews on another site that convinced us to make the detour to this terrific cafe in Lancaster! We came in just before the after-church lunch rush fortunately and were seated quickly. The employees were gracious (and smilingly tolerant of the wiggly little ones). Of course there was a bit of a wait because the food was fresh. (If you want fast, go to a chain like McDonald's or Chili's and enjoy the frozen food cooked in a microwave.) As to the criticism that the restaurant runs out of certain items sometimes, note that this is a fairly new restaurant, in a small town. In the food service business the profit margin is narrow and they can't afford to throw out food if they over-order. Consider that when a dish sells out quickly it must be a favorite and know you need to come in earlier next time. My first comment when I tasted the meatloaf was, "Just like my mama's!" Then I tasted the greens and had to admit they were even better. Sometimes "country cooking" means bland, canned, over-cooked, but none of that applies to Casserole Soul Cafe. The seasonings were noticeable and delicious. The candied yams were not too sugary and we think there was a nice hint of ginger. My grandson is a skinny little second grader and begged his mom to let him order the chicken fried chicken even though it looked huge. It was enormous, but it was so crisp and flavorful that he ate every bite. The chicken tenders, gravy, cornbread, mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were all hits and we had to take bites off each others' plates. My least favorite side was the vege casserole- nothing wrong, just not my favorite. My dad is a veteran foodie so I can't wait to send him here!

Food was average, chicken was fresh. I was at this location about 40 minutes, the stereo system playing a radio station was not playing correctly, and apparently the staff had no idea how to fix it, so they just let it play, missing every second syllable. Really annoying.

Subway is great for a fast sandwich that is inexpensive and is supposedly healthy if you pick the right condiments. I can also get tired of it quick just smelling that same bread scent all the time. But there is one on every corner and $5 can go a long ways. Clean and usually quick service. Watch for deals.
