Things to do in Brownwood
We don't often complete a review for Subway, but felt this location deserved a comment! We were traveling through Brownwood and needed a quick lunch. We stopped here and ordered two foot long sandwiches. The guys working behind the counter were especially pleasant. They made us feel appreciated to have stopped in. Interesting how a smile and a friendly comment can make a difference on your day! The guys were also very efficient and organized in putting the sandwiches together. We stop often at Subway because you know the quality will be consistent from one store to the next. In this case we ordered two footlong sandwiches for $6.00/each.

We arrived around 6:30 after a 3 hour road trip and were very hungry. Chilis was across the street from our hotel so we went there. Had a very friendly, outgoing waiter named Kyle and he was very attentive and provided great service. The food was tasty and service at a busy time was very reasonable. We were pleased with both food and food service.

We had the 3 meat plate, and based on Texas portions, thought it would feed the 3 of us. They gave small portions of the 3 meats. The meat was awesome and very smoky. Not as good as some Austin BBQ spots but good nonetheless. We had delicious fries and pinto beans as sides. Some buttery hot rolls came out of the oven too. Seems you have to ask for honey and pickles. We would go again if we were in town.

Stopped here around noon on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and was seated immediately, but it was extremely busy!Their special of the day was roast turkey($9.99) and we couldn't resist Thanksgiving food on Memorial Day. Turkey and dressing with any 2 sides on the menu. We were not disappointed...it was VERY GOOD...the turkey was really moist!

I don't understand why everyone brags about the steaks here when you can go to our Italian restaurant for 1000 times better. My husband and I have gone several times to try and eat here to only be disappointed in the food. We've had over cooked steaks (Medium) or burned hamburgers or just crappy fries. We do the three strikes and your out with restaurants and they earned 3 strikes!! Another thing that rally ticked me off was I was on a apple cider drink diet and had a sippy cup size drink that I brought with me so I could drink it right before me first bite. They would NOT let me bring it in?!! Needless to say we DO NOT WASTE OUR TIME OR MONEY THERE!! Even the kids meals are over priced!!

It's a trendy place in the middle of Brownwood Texas. Not the place you would expect to have such gourmet food. The burgers are delicious and the gelato yummy. Expect to pay a bit more for your food. It's a chef driven restaurant but I go there every time I'm in town. It's a great getaway.

Although this is not somewhere we frequent, it is good for some items. When visiting with family, I had the California Salad with fried chicken. It was excellent and I would have it again. The second time we went, I ordered Pete's Nacho's and they were not very good, in fact, I would say there was something spoiled used. I would not order them again. Recently, we returned and I order the chicken fried chicken with gravy and it was delicious. Their fries are great but hubby doesn't like them much. He usually gets steak and is fairly happy with that. He got shrimp on a skewer with steak but the shrimp were very tiny and overcooked to where he could not get them off the skewer in one piece. The side veggies often arrive ice cold so this is a problem. The rolls are very good but ask for extra butter. All in all, I recommend it here but be careful what you choose. Steak, salad and chicken seem fine.

We have been to Brownwood several times over the past five years and did not pay much attention to Studebaker's. Probably had to do with the old looking exterior and pot hole filled parking lot. Boy were we wrong. This place will surprise you. We went in for lunch and my son and I each ordered a burger and my wife got a chicken fried steak plate. The food was cooked to order and served piping hot. Burgers and chicken fried steak were first rate. I got tator tots and they were good and crispy. Sweet tea and peach sweet tea were both very good. Even better were the prices with the place being a good value overall. They also serve breakfast and have a daily special. Next time back in town will look to go again. Thanks for giving us a try and letting us know everyone enjoyed their food! Our little old building doesn't look like much on the outside but we try to make up for that with great food and service. Hope you'll come back to see us soon!

Underwood's is unique BBQ, especially for Central Texas. Their approach is more like TN where the BBQ is more about the sauce, and less about the smoke. Even so, it is very good tasting BBQ and sides/desserts that go with the meats are of a wide variety and all good. It is especially hard to resist taking their apple, cherry, or peach cobbler, and to top it off they have a server coming around the tables with dollops of whipped cream to enhance the already great flavor.Don't pass up the opportunity to try this restaurant.

Needed a lunch while in Brownwood, TX reprovisioning .Have been camped at Lake Brownwood State Park for four days. We use Verizon and this area of the Hill Country doesnât know Verizon exists, so could not get to Trip Advisor for local reviews. Asked a local and off we went to track down Runaway Train Cafe.First, noted plenty of trucks all with Texas tags! Establishment is in a repurposed Amtrak car. Very busy for Saturday afternoon. Seated us after a two minute wait. Jeanne & I split a reuben ( very creditable plus a super tasty pickle). The surprise was the Clam Chowder (I track down various chowders all over the world). This was a different take on Clam Chowder with Texas peppers (hot but not scalding) and plenty of clams! Will remember it for a long time. Wish we had purchased a quart or two for a camp meal.Kim Bruton, the manager, explained it is their recipe, and a long time favorite with locals. I believe it!,This is worth tracking down and enjoyingJeanne & Gil The Grey GourmetsThank you so much! It was a pleasure meeting y'all!
