Tennessee, United States Food Guide: 8 Mexican food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Chattanooga

August 31, 2020 Hector Krause

Find out what Mexican restaurants to try in Chattanooga. The name "Chattanooga" comes from the Creek Indian word for "rock coming to a point." This refers to Lookout Mountain, one of the city's major attractions. Here visitors can explore extraordinary rock formations, see a roaring enclosed waterfall and travel by train to the top of the mountain for truly awesome vistas. Back down on the ground, don't miss the world's largest freshwater aquarium, the Tennessee Aquarium. History enthusiasts will love the city's museums dedicated to Civil War, Native American and 20th-century history. More than anything, Chattanooga is a scenic city, full of natural wonders waiting to be explored by foot, car, bike or train.

Abuelo's

Real Mexican food is a feast for the senses. From colorful peppers to the sounds of sizzling fajitas all the way to that incredible flavor. Each mouthful is just as much a result of the freshest ingredients as it is a result of the chef's expertise. Abuel

Our first time here. We had come based on TripAdvisor recommendations. We had an early dinner so the dining room was not very busy. Our server we very polite and attentive and made good suggestions after bringing chips and a sampler of three salsas. The Laredo Enchilada plate was excellent. Very good atmosphere and decor. Prices were very reasonable for the amount received. We look forward to returning.

We visited Taconooga on Saturday after wandering around North Shore for a bit. We started with the bean and cheese dip and then had a few tacos (carne asada and al pastor). The menu was surprisingly interesting (I was surprised to see things like huitlacoche!), but everything seemed underseasoned to me - from the beans of the bean and cheese dip to the meat in the tacos. Everything we tried was missing salt for sure. It's a fun spot though!

I had not been here in quite some time. Recently, I took a friend. We had the incredible Guacamole Mexicana and each of us tried different nachos. They were absolutely delicious and the service was excellent! I don't know why people would go elsewhere, because other Mexican restaurants do not have these delicious options.

Mojo Burrito is a small chain of Mexican inspired restaurants in the Chattanooga area. You walk up to an assembly line with several employees doing their thing and passing it down the line...you’re involved in the assembly process as the architect and designer. They typically have about 6 beers, and by that I mean good beers, on tap. Others are available in cans or bottles. The vibe is very good, I guess you can call it a feel good kind of place. Also, if the line is long, do not be dismayed as it move quick.

This is not a sombreros-on-the-wall, Tex-Mex, combo-plate kind of restaurant. This is a more modern take on Mexican food, where the decor is clean and spare and you don't get a free bucket-o-chips and vat-o-salsa. While you certainly can get such as a starter -- and it's very good, as is the guacamole -- there are a number of other starter options that are equally worth your time & money. Don't worry, familiar favorites are all here, but the food is fresh and light, with more interesting dishes interspersed with the enchiladas and tamales. We did experience a few lapses in service -- my friend got a different cocktail than the one she ordered, and we had to remind the waiter twice about our chips and guac; we finally got them after some of our other items. He may have been new; he was friendly and cheerful, but seemed a bit tentative. The atmosphere is a little on the loud side, inevitable with all of the hard surfaces.

My friends and I have all been in the food business so we often discuss hospitality and how it's on the decline. Such was the conversation after our last MB experience. It pains us, actually. When you love a place and then the service experience makes you swear off ever visiting again, it's so frustrating. That's the case here so be warned that you won't get the warm greetings, smiles or happy to have you here attitudes from people who obviously just want to make ends meet. The food is hearty and tasty if you know how to order and just be watchful of checking out where you have to push tip or no tip when checking out. It's awkward to be asked to tip someone who just prepared your food and hands it to you. I thought tips were for wait service? I'm glad Mojo exists because you can count on decent food, fast. It's the perfect place to go if you are hungry and anti-social.

The atmosphere in this restaurant is appealing, the service is top notch and the food is delicious. Our waiter was very attentive and was always topping off the drinks. Everyone ordered a different entree and everyone was very happy with their choice. The mango salsa on the taco salad made the dish!

What a great experience, we really enjoy the atmosphere, the service and the food ! The service was fun & personal, very attentive, looking for feedback on the food and flavors, the Memphis Nachos were exceptional layers of goodness. An artistic mix of pull pork, corn slaw a sweet BBQ sauce and some cheese goodness water down with some Dos Perros and repeat ! . Tacos were on the point with creative shrimps done perfectly ! Again a great experience
