Lovely stay with exceptionally warm family establishment

Reviewed By Marafat

We spent two nights as a party of six, spanning three generations. Accommodations were very comfortable and proper. The fact that the structure was not luxurious and impeccable meant it was more authentic and relaxed, making for a more pleasant experience compared to posher ryokans. And the food outshines more deluxe establishments: the dinners were impeccable and some dishes unforgettable. The water in this onsen is famous and terrifically tasty which must account for the taste of the food, but the very friendly cook --- the mum --- must be the genius behind the performance. The tall, elderly gentleman was exceedingly helpful and generous with his time though some knowledge of Japanese would probably be necessary to fully appreciate his tour of the village. He was excellent in guiding us to important spots in the Tenkawa area.

Traditional but, convenient ...

Reviewed By Vanessa Y

It was a special occasion for us, so we chose "Momo-no-ma", a spacious room on the second floor, with it's own private onsen bath overlooking the garden. The room was very clean and consisted of three rooms, with a separate toilet and tiny bathroom, before the "rotenburo". The wooden "rotenburo" (outside bath) was excellent - you can adjust the temperature by yourself. We asked for a late check out (one hour for an extra 1000 yen) which gave us an extra soak in the tub, after brekkie. It's perfect for relaxing. The "onsen" water feels very silky so, it must be good for a lady's complexion! We had an early dinner (6 or 6:30 p.m.) downstairs in a private room (it's off season, so it wasn't crowded). The food was just the right amount and each dish had their own unique taste. Everything is beautifully displayed; all of the ingredients are fresh and locally grown. The quality and taste were good. We choose the "kamo-nabe" (duck hot pot) as our main dish and although such game is usually tough, the special blend of miso taste complimented it very well. We had "zo-sui" (with added rice and egg to the hot pot, afterwards - udon noodles are another choice), which was really delicious. The staff pretty much leave you to your own devices ... Breakfast has two time slots - 8 or 8:30 a.m. and it was just as good as dinner. It may be hard for some who don't like eating fish for brekkie, but the various types of tofu dishes are good. The inn itself is very old and well-looked after; the decor is traditional for the most part. In the evening, the lanterns outside are turned on and add to the traditional atmosphere of the town. It must be very hard to maintain such a building but, it still has all of the modern conveniences - like a fridge with complimentary drinks; TV; hotwater dispenser; a bit of a noisy heater (that you can't turn off); hair-dryer; washlet toilet etc., in the room we chose. The traditional feel to the inn's atmosphere is great. I took so many photo's just wandering around ... There are two "onsen" baths downstairs (one for men and women - and they switch at midnight) and as they don't have any windows, they do feel a bit claustrophobic. They have another private bath upstairs, outside, that you can use freely (just lock the door behind you). It overlooks the garden which is lovely. It's cozy for two. The only slightly disappointing part was how the staff handled things. The service is average. They explained everything well - about the facility; meals; baths etc. They speak Japanese casually (and if you can't speak the lingo, they use body language, they said). We had to drive our car to the carpark ourselves, which is far away (at Ryusenji Temple) as they don't have a valet service, like so many places do. They never smiled and they seem to disappear quickly. They're a young family business (so, you can hear them arguing sometimes), and they dressed very casually ... which is a shame, as such impressions count for the entire "onsen" experience. Overall, it's a fantastic traditional inn and we'd like to go back, one day.

Awesome hospitality

Totally exceeded expectations. Friendliest hosts, well maintained, and superb food. Incredible value for money considering the establishment is in the Michelin guide. Traditional breakfast and dinner included, which was superb. When we left a bag behind, owner drove with the bag until he caught up to us. Could not recommend more highly.

Very pleasant traditional accommodation

Reviewed By joelm185

Loved our stay here. Very comfortable traditional Japanese room, which was very warm and cosy when it was cold outside. The bathroom was heavenly after a day of hiking. The town was very quiet and closed in off season and the hotel was not able to offer dinner, however the hosts kindly drove us to a nearby simple restaurant which turned out to be great. The inluded breakfast was presented beautifully and brought to our room.

Reviewed By Explore820368
