Feisty Hen Pantry

We stopped for lunch at this place on the way between Launceston and Hobart. There were 5 people in the cafe when we arrived and we had the impression two of them had been waiting for some time. We ordered a sandwich, a ploughman's platter, a chocolate milkshake and a coffee. We then waited and waited. The (flavourless) milkshake arrived relatively quickly. Then after an hour the sandwich arrived. No sign of the ploughman's platter. Usually an order of two different dishes is served together. Meanwhile two more groups of customers had arrived and one group was served with their lunch... absolutely no sign at all of the 'missing in action' ploughman's. The owner finally noticed and 'said 'have you got everything you need?' Duh!!! No we did not and about 1 hour and 39 minutes had elapsed. This is appalling. We had plenty of time to witness the slow motion chaos in the kitchen. This place operates like 'Fawlty Towers'. The two staff people do not seem to be organised, do not have an organised routine for simple food preparation, do not focus on each task until it is finished nor do they appear to do any organised prep. They both drop what they are doing to serve customers and take money and generally flutter around aimlessly a lot. As well the refrigerated cabinet is poorly designed and opens outward to the customer's side, not near the food preparation area so that staff constantly have to walk out around it into the main part of the cafe to retrieve food ingredients. As well the owner spent a lot of time unsuccessfully hacking at something lodged in the freezer.I was ASTOUNDED to see how much disorganised time went into putting a simple sandwich and a ploughnman's lunch together. They are both assembly jobs which should take a maximum of three minutes each (from my experience in the food business). The ploughman's lunch FINALLY arrived at least 30 minutes after the sandwich was delivered to the table... way after people who arrived after us were served - with an apology but, irritatingly, minus the advertised chutney. We ate, gave the coffee a miss and leftTo be fair, the owner did apologise and took the price of the sandwich off our bill. The food, when it did come, was very good. However, despite having left Launceston in plenty of time to catch our plane from Hobart... the age spent at this cafe waiting for food to be served meant we nearly missed our plane.Another issue which disturbed us was the cafe staff's food handling practices - an example was going put to pat and cuddle a customer's dog in the middle of lunch time service This was was an 'errkkkk' moment for us. Food handling gloves and lots of proper hand washing should be utilised a lot more consistently here. What a shame. We were looking forward to a nice lunch. The food is good. The service is awful

Stables

I visited here a few years ago and it was average at best and was prepared to give it another go but sadly nothing has really improved. The entry is far from welcoming with the garden unkempt and dirty dishes on the tables. We decided to sit in the sun and my friend went inside to order but was then sent abruptly outside to wait where our order was to be taken. Coffees and a slice of cake to share were ordered and then we waited and waited. Finally the coffees came out which were ok and then the cake arrived which was tasty but a very small serving for the price. This place has so much potential ...

There is not much happening in Oatlands after dark in winter as even the pub has closed. But fortunately for travellers the RSL is still going strong. A great and very hospitable place with a log fire and actually very good chicken shnitzels - something that I usually avoid in pubs - but the waitress recommended it and she was right - it was great!

We went to the Oatlands Roadhouse to buy a late takeaway lunch...what a great place, everything was so clean and tidy and a great menu selection. We ordered hot chips and gravy...yummy they were so good, coffee was great too. A good find in a pretty town. Well done guys

We had coffee an sandwiches plus carrot cakes in this place and the service was friendly and efficient. The food was very good as well. However the waitress had very messy and unkempt hair dangling around; the reputation would have even better if she had tidied herself up.
