Ebisu was established as the first specialized soba restaurant in the area more than 100 years ago. The original Ebisu restaurant is located at San-machi Street which is in national important traditional building preservation area. The street is famous for its ancient township with warehouses for Takayama Festival floats as well as castle town, and a historical commercial district. The sign for the restaurant contains original glass pieces from when the restaurant opened. The interior design of the building also remains unchanged. Our restaurant has been cherished for generations as an established soba shop where customers enjoy old fashioned food and atmosphere, looking over irrigation canals through wooden windows, unique doors and authentic Japanese Gardens.

The premises in which "Suzuya" folk restaurant is set are scaled-down models of solid, integrate, sound and beautiful houses completed through generations in this Hida Takayama district. For we want you to appreciate thi architectural masterpieces of Hida Takayama and enjoy the atmosphere that comes out of them. Simple and clean interior with minimum decorations will make you feel calm and relaxed while you are sitting at table. "Sansai Teisyoku"or wild plants table with much mountain and fluvial products,"Hobamiso" or pastoral Miso, "Shabu-Shabu" and "Misotakinabe" or selected vegetables and meat served in the hot pot,and other kinds of Hida dishes elaborately relished to each season-- we are looking forward to serving you with these dishes. ※Hida takayama= this area ※Sansai=edible wild plant ※Teisyoku=set meal ※Hoba=magnolia leaf ※Miso=Source fermented soybeans
We went to Suzuya without booking so can't get a table. Then we booked for the next day dinner at 6pm. We arrived on time but they asked us to wait for a certain time until we could get a table. Suprisingly we didn't hear "Irrashaimase" any time to any customers coming in.
This restaurant is recommended by our hotel. The restaurant seems too busy but with tourists only. It seems tourists coming here for checking in but not because of foods.
We had the most expensive dinner ever in Japan this journey but food portion was minimum because prices are so high for each small portion of food, taste is not special (my friend runs a Japanese Restaurant and I'm working for a Japanese Foods supply Co.) so we supposed our evaluation is quite sharp.
We ordered Sabu sabu but they even didn't give us bowls though we asked several time. The waitress was so busy and may forget our ask for bowls not once time we were little bit disappointed with their way of taking care customer. If anyone wishes to try typical Japanese/Takayama foods, it is not a must to go to Suzuya

Known for its award winning hida steak, Le Midi doesn't disappoint. The meals are large enough to give that satisfied feeling yet not so filling you aren't enticed by dessert. I was disappointed they only had one bottled beer variety but the wine list certainly made up for that. I'd eat here again.

We don't have a beef. We served chinese & local dishes. Cooking can correspond to vegetarian, vegan, various allergies.
We were really excited to try this place, having seen the amazing reviews it got on TripAdvisor and we weren’t disappointed. Walking into the restaurant, it’s an immediate authentic Japanese experience in terms of atmosphere and decor—we were greeted by the owners very warmly and offered a seat at the bar or on the floor. The food was delicious, one of the best meals we’ve had in Japan. It is a fusion of Chinese and Japanese cuisine. We contacted the restaurant on Facebook first to reserve our table and the whole process was very easy! The female owner was super lovely and made the experience.

I love Japanese food, but every know and then I craved some western style food. From the exterior of the shop you might not give it a second glance, but once you enter and pass the well stocked bar at the front, the burger bar is at the rear of the premises. It is quite compact, with a funky decor and obviously very popular with Japanese and Westerners alike. The burgers were good, not quite as large as one might be used to but certainly adequate and the chunky fries were great. Perfect with a Japanese lager.

This restaurant does Hida beef-- which is highly marbled and very rich. There are several ways to eat this and the restaurant is happy to advise you. My advice is to have it sukiyaki style. Cooking it in the broth adds flavor and diminishes the fat. It's a very 'Takayama' experience.

Ate dinner with my family during our stay in Takayama (wife and two boys aged 5 and 8). Great building in the old part of town. Most tables you sit around a charcoal fire where you cook your meat and vegetables. Some you sit on tatami mats others have more Western style Seating. The food is great. We sampled all the different grades of meat which was fun. Boys loved the place and the menu had a lot of options. Highly recommended. Very nice atmosphere but not too loud so you can still hear everyone speak

The service was meticulous and fast. The ambience was good with warm lights and nice instrumental music playing in the background. The restaurant was spacious, a change from the usually compact Japanese restaurant. The food was fantastic. The Hida Beef melts in your mouth. We ordered the sukiyaki set and Big Set which had 140g of Hida Beef. We were very satisfied with the meal and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Just when we thought we have experienced the only Hida bovine heaven, our gastronomic encounter here proved that we have revisited another - one the same day!
Kottegyu (こって牛) was always on our agenda but after an extremely long and tiring day, we never expected to wrap up on such a new high.
Located in Takayama old town touristy Sanomachi district, you cannot miss the perpetual queue in front of the kiosk.
Patiently we waited and order sets of lightly seared Hida beef nigiri (seasoned with grated ginger and scallion, another with bamboo charcoal salt) and raw Hida beef toro nigiri, flavored with soy sauce, wasabi, and lightly topped with shredded spring onions. All beautifully plated on edible prawn crackers.
The creme de la creme was really the raw toro, never in my wildest dream can I imagine raw beef (first timer too) to taste as good as the best toro from Tsukiji. It really melted in my mouth and burst into orgasmic flavours. This is definitely one of the final meal I want if on death row (along w a curry ramen and Gyu don from a cafe in Kyoto).
We could have queued up again to confirm our taste but no, we let that moment lingered and anyway we have to find our ryokan and settle down.
It's so good, worth making a trip to Takayama just for this.
