The city is very easy to navigate. However, it is best to know where you want to go. The taxi drivers do not speak English. I recommend having the hotel front desk write out 3x5 cards for you in Russian. Also, some taxi's are metered and some are not. Always ask and if not, agree on a price prior to getting in.

Shakhrisabz is a restaurant in the city center. Everyday they have a live music. However the music is very loud and it is not possible to hear each other while the music is on, and the music is always on )))))) Food is good, service is poor.But they have a VIP room downstairs, it is a much better place with a much better service.

if you know Dushanbe, imagine a traditional upscale Tajik restaurant with colors and decor. This is Ararat restaurant, which in addition to Tajik and Asian cuisine, offers Armenian cheese, bread and BBQ. Pork can be order (rarity in Dushanbe).

Staff is really nice and helpful- speaking good English as well. Big choice of food for lunch and dinner with possibility of delivery. Check their website.In addition desserts are outstanding do you can step by even for coffee and cake.Highly recommended place in the very centre.

After finding another coffee place closed for renovations I moved on to this great place. The coffee selection is large and they have a good menu which includes omelets and other western breakfast items. The service is good and the staff very friendly, especially if one knows some Russian. Opens early.

We fancied a change from central Asian food so tried this Ukrainian restaurant recommended by Lonely Planet and only round the corner from our hotel. We were not disappointed - the waiter was very friendly and spoke very good English. Unfortunately there were no pork dishes available which are said to be very good. Instead we had Zrazy (potato pie) filled with mushrooms followed by pot roast beef and chicken with mustard sauce respectively. The zrazy were very hot and tasty. Unfortunately my chicken was lukewarm as were the side dishes of potatoes and vegetables - otherwise we would have given a 5-star rating.
