Gelsenkirchen (German pronunciation: [ˌɡɛlzn̩ˈkɪʁçn̩] ( listen)) is a city in the North Rhine-Westphalia state of Germany. It is located in the northern part of the Ruhr area. Its population in 2015 was c. 260,000.
