Kamisuwa Onsen Shinyu opened in April, 2014 and was born in the historical area, where has Takajima Castle and Suwa Shrine. Fresh spring water, cuisines full of local nature, rooms with beautiful lake view, etc. The sophisticated atmosphere, healing arts, all for your relaxing stay.
We decided to stop in Suwa to break up a long drive back to Tokyo. Shinyu looked very good and the price was reasonable. The hotel is renovated and gives a nice modern spa hotel atmosphere. The greeting at the hotel is very nice and the lobby area is beautiful. We felt very welcomed when we arrived. Our room was facing the lake. It was Japanese style with tatami and futons. Nice room, nice view. The public bath was nice. Not huge but felt very good. They have an indoor bath, small outdoor bath, a sauna and a cold bath. Dinner was great, as was breakfast. They were both courses and delicious. Service? Well, this is what makes all the difference. When we book hotels we need to detail my daughter's food allergies which are serious. For this trip we had booked many hotels in a row and for some reason when we booked Shinyu and checked-in we just forgot. It was our fault and when we sat for dinner we saw her prepared meal that she obviously could not eat. The staff at Shinyu didn't miss a beat. The didn't make a big deal about it. No stress. The quickly adjusted and made a wonderful dinner for my daughter and also prepared for her breakfast in similar fashion. Wonderful. Such great service. Maybe the building isn't perfect. But the service was perfect. Shinyu was our last stop on our trip and we left with a smile. Shinyu gets an "Excellent" from my family.

Unpleasant experience: Check in time is 3pm and they charge JPY 1,000 for each hour that you want to check in earlier. Pretty bad when you arrive late morning after a red-eye flight from overseas. Even worse: Check out time is 10am! And same game trying to charge some extra Cash for some hours extra. This is the most restrictive early checkin/late check out policy that I've ever experienced in any hotel worldwide. Clear decision: Sorry, but never again!

I stayed in a room with an open-air bath. It was clean and the hot spring water was soft and made my skin smooth. We also visited the large bathroom downstairs, which was spacious and had nice spring water. Dinner was prepared in a separate private room. Again, this was a nice Japanese-style room with a relaxed atmosphere. The food was very tasty from the starters and I felt happy. And the staff were very helpful, both at the front desk and in the restaurant. She saw me off when I left, and at that point she pointed to the roof of the hotel and said, "Look. I looked at the roof and saw a real heron perched on it. And when we got in the car and started driving away, the heron flew away too. That was the last service at the Saginoyu(Heron’s Bath).

As hotels go in Japan, based on what I’ve experienced so far, this hotel is similar in size and what is offered. My only negative is the fact we had to have a room which had been a smoking room and therefore was very hard to be in due to the odour. Apparently they have non-smoking rooms but as we were with a tour they were not available to us. This made the stay a little unpleasant, however if you drink plenty of wine and stay out late you’ll be fine. The facilities were great, good breakfast and all other usual options. Rooms were very clean, beds were very hard that we had, but again apart from that and the smoking odour, it would have been fine. Would recommend but if you are not a smoker, make sure you ask for a non-smoking room.

This hotel is only a 5 minute walk from the Kamisuwa train station. Friendly service with just enough English to get the basics. Good buffet breakfast and clean environment. The rooms are VERY small by Western standards. Literally just enough space for a bed and small table. Didn't measure, but entire room is maybe 7x10 feet. I'm 6 feet and top of my head almost touched the ceiling in the shower. Fantastic value at USD$55 a night, but it's basically a clean and friendly place to sleep.

Perfect location, excellent breakfast buffet with many dietary options and our newly renovated room was spacious, spotless and quiet. The in-house onsens were an added bonus after a day of sightseeing in lovely Lake Suwa.

We stopped over in Kami-Suwa to catch the express coach to Hirugami Onsen the next day. Hotel is about 8mins walk from Kami-Suwa West Exit; it’s a longer walk from East Exit. The random room we were assigned was a large recently renovated Tatami style room with western box spring mattresses on a raised platform; very comfortable with attached bathroom n toilet. The gender separated Onsen are large with indoor n outside baths. Water was adequately hot n ph of about 8. Dinner was served in a dining room n the food quality was good n sumptuous. Will certainly book this hotel if we came this way again.

Location: The hotel is located in walking distance from JR Kami Suwa station (about 10-minute walk). It is possible to drag luggage from train station to hotel, but consider taking taxi if you don't mind spending some money. I don't think this hotel provides shuttle service to/from train station. Service: Kami-Suwa is a hot spring town that is under the radar from foreign visitors, so it is totally understandable that hotel staff could not speak English. In fact, only one lady in the front desk could speak a little bit English. Nevertheless, their service was hospitable and genuine. The biggest language challenge was the introduction to hot spring hotel etiquette by hotel staff (an old lady with zero English skill). We frequently misunderstood her words, but at the end the body language worked out. Dinner service, breakfast service, room service, and hot spring service were all very considerate. I was pleasantly surprised that they offered free beer, free tea, and/or free ice cream sweets at the entrance of hot spring area (located on top floor). They provide a few Wagashi in the room for guests. Food: We had the "Suhaku set dinner" (朱白膳) as part of the half-board package. The food pictures on their official website looked like you can hardly fill your stomach, but in reality, it was a 12-course meal, and by the time we finished the full dinner, we were very full. The meal was spectacular. The breakfast (7-course meal) was also amazing and very filling. They use a lot of local food for meals (local rice, local beef, local fish, local miso soup) Overall: This was one of the best hot spring hotels I stayed for my trip. I would recommend this hotel to foreign visitors who can speak some Japanese and have previous experience staying at traditional hot spring hotels (so that you know the etiquette). This happened to be my first ever hot spring hotel experience, and we spoke very little Japanese, so there were quite a lot of communication challenges.
