On the castle mountain of Kapfenstein, you can eat, drink and live in ways not possible anywhere else in Styria.
The atmosphere and location are enough to warrant a visit to this Schloss! But the cuisine and service make it a great experience, looking out over the beautiful surrounding countryside. We had a window seat and dined bathed in lovely autumn sunshine. The food was very good: we had super entree sized dishes (starters in some peoples' parlance). A medley of game was well cooked and presented. A dish based on local cheeses made the other chosen dish. Professional and friendly service, good wine selection and regional beer made for a very good experience. We shall visit again and mostly likely stay in the hotel, which offers very well priced packages .

As part of the hotel room package is to take soup and salad from the downstairs restaurant. The soup and salad were of an extremely good standard and served with freshly baked. The restaurant specializes in pizza and it also looks great.

We were here on a business dinner so couldn't choose our own meals. The starters (local styrian specialities), the soup, the main course (different kinds of wild game) and the dessert were tasty but nothing spectacular. The service was ok, but the climatisation of this place is bad as I could smell my clothes on the next day. The other low point of this place is the toilet which is located outside in a container - is very small and dirty. They should improve this as soon as possible.

I've been in this place with friends when we were on our way to the Zotter Chocolate factory, one week ago. Apparently there were no other restaurants open in the same area, as we were at the beginning of the year and all activities are "frozen" (still, this is the most touristic-oriented district of Steiermark). So, after asking advice to locals, we opted for it, as it also looked like clean and neat: in other words, well promising. We all opted for daily menus, as advertised on the entrance. In all my previous experience, daily menus are cheap but also a warranty of freshness and taste. This was not the case: beside the soup, the main dishes were completely disappointing. Tasteless and undressed steamed carrots and potatoes: just like the menu in a public hospital. The fish above all, reportedly "fresh local salmon trouts", was smelling like rotten and partly raw, i.e. not cooked at all.At the end the dessert that we got was uneatable, old brioches, hard like stones, sank in a tetra-pack whipped cream. Needless to say that most of us, the children above all, left it there on the dish.As a cherry on the cake when we got the bill we discovered that each bottle of 0.75lt of water costed us 5 (five) euro!!!

We stopped here for the lunch after Vulkanland radmarathon. We had to wait about 5minutes at the bar, because they were full. We had green and herbal tea. Asparagus soup tasted great. Deer steak with asparagus and sweet potatoes was delicious. Zander fillet with noodles and salad tasted good. After lunch we had two espresso. Our bill was about 50â¬.

Great views, great service, great value delicious food. What to say more? The waitress spoke very good English and was quite funny. Even though we originally stopped for a drink only, the menu was so tempting that we couldn´t resist and we were very happy we didn´t. My pumpking cream soup was superlicious and for 3,10 EUR an absolute steel (it was a meal on it´s own). My partner had a plate of 4 different smoked fish which was huge and very nicely presented (10 EUR). We were sitting outside under the vines overviwing the castle. Perfect experience. And on top, the owner was even so nice to help us with our flat tire on the bike!
