Things to do in Sao Joao del Rei

Good place to go, though it's too crowded. I went with my husband and daughter and we asked some pork ribs and onion rings which was delicious indeed. But craft beer is too expensive considering what I am used to paying in other places here in São João Del Rei and Tiradentes. The service is good. They don't charge tips.

It was sunday, and we were recommended, to stop by and peek in at the restaurant called Taberna d'Omar, on the street corner in front of the church... however, the atmosphere was brutally irresistible, and we just HAD to stay. For those not familiar with Brazil, a couple of decades ago, it was quite popular to have sunday morning in small bars with live music playing, of a particular type of brazilian style known as "chorinho". It is part of the "bohemian bar culture", and now harder to find, as it is usually only the older generation that appreciates it, and the youngsters are not learning to play it. It is 100% brazil, and culture, and traditionally, only to be found on sundays. To our surprise, the place was packed, and a band was playing chorinho, so nobody was inclined on leaving... but we got a spot in the restaurant. So that is the cultural "background" of the scene... in a restaurant in a historic colonial-style building, in front of the square of the church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Our Lady of Carmel), which could be seen from the huge colonial windows. That not being enough, the food was just as good as the rest of the setting: in other words, a journey to paradise! Yes, in this small spot, we managed to forget where we were, and what was happening in the world, as it created its own world of music and food, combined with overworked, but extremely friendly staff. The food was great, the salads fresh, the meals prepared with care.If you manage to visit Sao Joao del Rei over the weekend, save your sunday for the lunch or luncheon break here - you will not regret it!
