It is one of the largest towns in southern province. It is located 195 km (121 mi) south of Colombo and 35 km (22 mi) east of Matara. Incredibly bad and slow service! We arrived and were greeted by no one. There was a group of five and us three and it took for ages for us to get the menu. After that it took for nearly an hour for us to get our meals! Waiter didnât seem to understand me who spoke English, so the Sinhalese people in my group had to translate for him. When we asked to order cocktails, the waiter said itâs not possible because he cannot make them - WHAT?! Food was basic and not great in any way. Sweet and sour chicken was just overly fried chicken with tons of pepper - not even any sauce. The location on the beach is wonderful and the restaurant is nice looking and they have great swings on the beach. Wouldnât recommend this place for anyone. Can get better food for the same price (or cheaper) elsewhere.

We enjoyed Christmas Eve dinner at Ulpatha during our stay. It was a 5 course delight of fabulous food -lobster bisque, scallops, sorbet, confit leg of duck and chocolate desert. Every course was cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. Aside from the wonders of the kitchen staff the service we received from Shashi was first class. He was attentive,efficient, friendly and just excellent at his job which made the experience very special for us. The restaurant manager was also amazing and took time out of what was a busy evening to chat with us and his story of coming home to allow him to train and develop others like Shashi is testament to both him and Shangri-La. Our experience was so enjoyable we dined in the restaurant again for our Christmas Day dinner and were once again impressed by the food and the fabulous service from Shashi - thanks Team Ulpatha!

This place is far above the bar set in Tangalle by other restaurants/bars.The staff (especially the manager) take quality and service very seriously. Come with high expectations!We were given a personal treatment like arriving in a good friend's home, can easily tell everyone takes pride in their work, the raw ingredients are of excellent quality and the cooking so professional that it is no surprised the result is magnificent.I highly recommend the grilled fish (not from the menu, from the box by the grill)! It was one of the best I've ever had. We also ordered the mahi-mahi which was out of this world.The look of the place is magical and even if you're not down for a full dinner, the drinks were great. We had a fresh lime-mint and a coconut milk + avocado both were excellent.The cherry on top is the manager, Ingrid, a beautiful human with a true sense of hosting experience and stories that will make you fall in love with Sri Lanka on your first visit.Honestly if you go to Tangalle and skip The Lounge you're missing the best parts.
