Where to eat European food in Risor: The Best Restaurants and Bars

Risør is a beautiful town on the south coast of Norway - one of the best preserved wooden house settlements in the country. This tiny restaurant lies on the "boulevard" (which is just a small street along the pier), along with a pub, the hotel and the aquarium. Right on the other side of the street is the guest harbour, where the boats are able to moor and connect to land power, water and wi-fi. As such, this is a nice place for the tourists to stop by, especially since they have a breakfast buffet between 8-11 am.For the diners, the view is very nice whether you sit outdoors or inside, as the indoor facilities is separated from the outside only by large windows. There are approximately 5-7 tables inside and the same outside, enabling the restaurant to cater to only a moderate amount of guests at a time. The view is of the harbour and the nice Norwegian skerries. The reason the atmosphere does not get at better grade is the noise by the indoor tables; the big glass walls create an echo which makes the whole place somewhat loud. The menu is small, but the contents good. Mainly fish dishes, but also such things as omelets, sallads and a steak. They also have a variety of soft drinks, wine, a good selection of beer and spirits. We tried different dishes. The halibut with capers was very good; perfectly cooked and with an excellent dill sauce. I had the haddock-based fish burger and found it bland; there was not much taste in it. The fried mackerel suffered the same fate - it was OK, but did not have too much flavour. The steak (tenderloin) was quite all right, but slightly overcooked. The chicken sallad was OK and had some very good garlic bread to go with it.Another thing to note was that one of the dishes was unavailable: fish & chips. It was apparently because they had run out of chips. A little imagination from the chef and he could easily have replaced the correctly-shaped "french fries" for some oven-cooked potatoes. The service held cafeteria standard, perhaps fitting for such a café-like restaurant. The young man who served us was polite and pleasant, but could have been more knowledgable about the dishes - especially considering the menu only has around a dozen of them. Also, there was no typical pop-by a little while after serving. Still, we were quickly accomodated when arriving in a party too large for a single table, prices were quite reasonable (although drinks were a bit steep), and the food arrived quickly.

We ate twice here, once when we had just come into Risoer after a grueling 20 hour journey, and once later in the week. Basic food - pizzas, pasta and the like is served by friendly multinational Norwegians. One waitress was originally from the Congo, and was happy to speak French, others were more local; all were very helpful. Nice atmosphere, right on the sea front, with views over the harbour and shipping.
