Pias Poppies had not disappointed our expectation. It is just across the street from Toraja Heritage Hotel, where we stayed. Our driver and guide had ordered for us the Torajan traditional food, as it ia freshly cooked on special order only. It is called Pa'Piong. We tried Pa'Piong Manuk (chicken) and Pa'Piong Duku Bai (pork). Both very tasty. It is chicken or pork meat, cut in cubes, mixed with torajan vegetables and spices, then roasted in bamboo for about 2hours. Pias Poppies had done very well and the small hotel & restaurant was full of Western tourists. It looks clean for Toraja and well managed. The owners are husband and wife, who had worked in the hotel and restaurants in Bali for many years before decided to return to Toraja and started a guest housebwith only 1 room and grew the business to now having 20 plua rooms (if I remember correctly). The restaurant is really highly recommended. We came back for dinner again the night thereafter, tried some other dishes and all were also very good.

Cafe Kapitoo

Ngopi di Atas Awan. Coffee above the cloud. Succulent blends, scrumptious dishes, relaxing ambiance and morning view above the cloud of Toraja, what else could be perfect? Only here, in Kapitoo.

We actually stayed the night in the Kapitoo Glamping tents and would recommend that to anyone! We had dinner that night as there is literally nowhere else nearby. I was quite surprised how "hipster" and modern the place was. I hear the owner although Torajan, lives in Jakarta and this shows as its not what you expect to find out in the middle of nowhere! The roads, as already mentioned, are practically impassable and very bumpy. The main building is a gorgeous "Instagrammable" glass walled structure made with light woods, so unlike most places in Torajaland it is very bright and airy. There is the open plan kitchen and bar where you can see everything being prepared - spotlessly clean. Out front is a lovely deck where you can watch the sunset. Service is very sweet, they don't necessarily speak English but they used a translator app and although we made a few alterations to the menu items it all came out correct.Food options are a little limited especially as a lot of items were unavailable. It is probably suited better to lunch and light bites if you are passing by rather than dinner. I completely understand though how hard it must be to get food in fresh as the roads getting here are dreadful. No vegetarian options, but I was able to communicate to staff and they tailored a dish for me. The menu tried to suggest their food offers cosmopolitan "fusion" dishes, in actuality the offerings are a little standard - Indonesian dishes and burgers for the Westerners. That being said it is all fresh and cooked right in front of you in a beautiful, serene and unique location.

We went there twice because they have a large selection of dishes including Vg ones. The place is bog with a lot of space. The Waiting time is low. The food is good. Don't seat to close to the front door if you want to avoid the screaming tv shows...

I am guessing that this restaurant has moved from Jl Diponegoro 19 to it's spiffy new premises which looks clean and attractive. It is now located a short distance beyond Rimiko Restoran a few doors further from the centre of town. It serves Indonesian Chinese with lots of rice and noodle dishes. There is a tick the box form to order which unfortunately does not exactly match the menu. It appeared to be popular with locals and was also doing lots of take-away orders. The waitress did not have English skills but a gentleman from behind the counter came to assist us and had excellent English. It is possible to get vegetarian food. The dishes only cost a few dollars. They served cold Bintang.

I went here because it was packed with locals, they don't speak English but they are very friendly (if you're polite and don't expect them to understand English, i speak a bit of bahasa). They have dishes in front so you can just point and sit down. Food was authentic, excellent and very cheap. Best meal i ate by far and cheapest too.

Nice atmosphere, place is clean. Staff speak good english and the menu is in english as well. Local food and also some "western" like pasta o pizza. Food was OK. We had the impression that not everything was fresh. Pity because there is a market a few stops from here. Prices are much lower than in the restaurants at hotels/guesthouse.

After having mostly ayam during our trip through Indonesia we enjoyed coming to Rantepao and finding babi restaurants like this one. The food was very delicious, freshly prepared. Prices are fair. It can get busy in the evening (full of locals!) so come early or be prepared to wait for a free table.

The staff is efficient and very friendly, gladly noting your special requests for how you prefer your food. Often bigger tour groups come here because of the good food quality and service.Do give the Toraja food a try here...... Johannes, the owner is a very friendly and accommodating host and manager.

Cafe Aras

Reviewed By Jérôme T

Comments label it trendy... but there are several newer places in the same street that are as clean and comfortable as Cafe Aras. They sure know they are well rated on TripAdvisor. So the prices are way too high, more expensive than many tourist restaurants in Jakarta (fried vegetables are the cheapest on the list, at 25000 + tax !)... They charge a 10% tax on top (very unusual in Indonesia) and a 5% bank cost if you don't pay cash. The menu is complete, with a wide variety of pricey "western-believed" dishes you wouldn't find anywhere else in the world and casual Indonesian food and toraja specialties. Yet, when we asked for avocado salad (yes, it is a typical Indonesian dish here), they had only 1 avocado left and wanted to keep it for juices (I liked the honesty to say it !).When we visited, a duo was playing a few songs in English and Spanish, that tore our ears apart : loud, off key...Lastly, the staff is so numerous, most of them looked like on the wait most of the evening. To conclude : while you are in Rantepao, look for best bargains around here. There are plenty !
