Reviews on Pub food in Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand. Rare yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals and the world's only mainland albatross colony share residence in Dunedin, New Zealand's oldest city. When you're not watching wildlife, this South Island Otago Coast town also boasts impressive historic architecture from its days as a gold-rush mecca. Visit the 1906 Flemish Renaissance railway station or the country's largest center of higher learning, which resembles Glasgow University, thanks to the area's early Scottish settlers.

The food in this establishment is sure. It reminded us of school dinners. Just plopped in mounds on the plate, no presentation whatsoever. Very bland and uninteresting. We would not eat there again. My husband's roast was just a plate of mush and my chicken and bacon pasta had huge lumps of indifferent chicken and very salty bacon instead of being cut into small dainty pieces. GhastlyWe would not return. The whole dining room needs a thorough refurbishment. The furniture is like school furniture. The rest of the decor is very drab indeed and dark and dismal. The staff are scruffy.

Typical New Zealand Irish pub, great atmosphere with real people who are a little rough around the edges. Barman on the nights i was there was a real laugh, friendly and accommodating. Got your beloved irish beers on offer, overall a great pub,

We had a burger and the beef stew for lunch...hand made patty was very good, the stew was very tender and both dishes were rather large for lunch! Fries were nice and crispy. Tavern atmosphere had a working fireplace too! Reasonably priced.

Ratbags & Innocent Bystander has been established since 2010, has a great reputation as a pub, gourmet pizza bar and entertainment venue. We churn out our pizzaâs by the metre, we are an ideal venue to catch up on sports events on the tele and provide var
We need somewhere to have dinner and we decided on Ratbags because of the half price pizza half metre pizza. The place was empty..it was a Monday night. We had a few drinks, the girl serving was really lovely. And of course the biggest surprise....the pizza was so delicious. We are from Melbourne and have eaten some excellent pizza...and this was right up there. I would highly recommend the pizza here....

The Albar is usually our favourite haunt in Dunedin as it's a cosy little pub with some great craft beers. However, had a disappointing visit this weekend. Had a couple of lovelly beers on tap which we were enjoying immensely until the bar maid over charged us on round four. We'd already been told they were $10 per pint but on round four was suddenly charged $12 per pint. When questioned as to why they had suddenly gone up was told the tills must have been updated mid evening. Questionable! More likely she thought we were from out of town. Shame as we normally highly recommend this pub to all visitors to Dunedin.

Portobello Hotel is located in the heart of the Otago Peninsula. It has held its licence and been the watering hole for the locals since 1874. Come and enjoy our stunning views while enjoying a cold kiwi brew or some wonderful kiwi fare. Casual, local atm
On a quiet Sunday night, this pub was a little oasis for us as we were staying nearby on Portobello Road. The road is undergoing significant upgrades at the moment so the whole area will be even better once complete. With not too many there on a Sunday night, the service was good, and the meals were served very quickly. The Chowder was excellent, generously sized, and served with the longest piece of herb bread I have seen in a long time. Being a pub, plenty of options for drinks and the choice of local NZ wines by the glass very good.

The lad running the tours was great, a lot of passion and knowledge for the company and production of craft beer. We went on a Friday afternoon tour where a lot wasnât working so that was a little disappointing. Generous samples and we had food at the cafe while drinking the samples - the food and atmosphere at the cafe were great.

The Speight's Ale House is located in Dunedin's iconic Speight's Brewery. We've been delivering hearty southern fare and the full range of Speight's beers on tap since 1999. We are open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.
A group of us went along for a close friends birthday dinner at Speight's! Never being there before I was excited as I'd heard such great things about the restaurant and how fantastic the food is (especially the steak!). I actually ordered the steak but can't remember which cut it was, however I was SO disappointed! It was beyond chewy and bland. On my dish I also had a salad which I thought I'd eat instead but it was unpleasant to say the least. Who puts tomato sauce all over a salad? First I've seen of that! I was bummed about my dinner, especially with steak being a favourite of mine. What I found quite shocking was I'd gotten up to use the restroom and when I'd come back my meal was gone! I hadn't even been asked if I was finished, plate being over half full of my food is obviously not near finished and even if I weren't to have finished it I think I still should've been asked. Paid for my meal anyhow although I really should've spoken up about it, didn't want to ruin a friend's birthday.

A feature for me was the greeting and welcome from our waitress. Impressive service. For lunch, we had an entree of seafood platter. Quite lovely and not too much. A taste sensation. I had fish of the day for my mains. Disappointed. The fish of the day was Monk fish. Meant to be pan-fried but tasted like it had been steamed. Vegetables were the highlight of the plate and roasted potatoes which were overdone but there were no flavours. Fairly basic I thought. Needs a bit of creativity with this dish. Family members ordered fish cakes and they were scummy with sauces. They were delicious and I wished I had ordered that. I watched them eat their dish with envy. Still it was a great place to visit
