Lyman Cafe

IF you know and love country cooking, then you'll be more than happy that you stopped here. The food is fantastic! The service was non stop with no less than five servers stopping by our table to refill our tea, remove empty dishes, and bring more bread. We ate there on a Friday night and the price of the seafood buffet was unbelievably cheap. And it was all excellent, home cooked, not greasy..delicious! But it was the "country cooking" that I could not get away from. They have the REAL country style steak and gravy there. And those turnip greens were mighty fine. Everything there on this night was better than I expected. I am lucky enough to eat all over this country and this is the best country cooking that I have seen in a long, long time. I had to read some of the previous reviews to see how everyoneone was not rating this place five stars. Maybe some don't know how this ratings system works. Many of the reviewers eat there often and bragged on the food but decided to give them a average or poor rating. I don't understand that. Some folks like fancy surroundings with a wait person that wants nobody else talking to "their table" and a crazy bill for a good meal. I understand that and like that every once in a while..but this is country cooking, excellent, and all you can eat! Contrary to what others said, this is not "dumped out of a can" and no Golden Corral can touch this food. I want this kind of food, with my tea glass refilled by a friendly server. If you are traveling down I-85 on a long trip and you have time to stop, set your GPS and make the short drive. Warning...if you ain't from the South, you may not be able to fully enjoy this excellent food. But ANYBODY can spot homemade banana pudding..and they have it too!! Trust me, it's gooOOOD!!

Zaxbys is one of my favorite chains so we tend to stop at lots of them. Loved music. It felt a little slow in service for an off the highway stopover. And with the salad I ordered it looks like they just took regular white bread and barely grilled it for me rather than giving me the normal Texas toast all the other locations give me. My husband had Texas toast for his sandwich so there was a big difference in what they look like. I don't need white bread as my side dish. Generous portion on salad but too lighting fries.

Of all the pizza chains, Pizza Inn is by far my favorite. They're consistent. They don't overwhelm you with a ketchup-y sauce and they give you a healthy portions of toppings. And the toppings are cut uniformly, not in erratic chunks The crust is thin and Pizza Inn is the best.

Demetre's

Demetre's is an unexpected gem in Duncan, South Carolina. We were staying very nearby for a day at the BMW high performance driving school and found this less than a mile from our hotel. We ate at the bar twice. The prime rib is excellent. (tip: If you are like me and don't want to eat 9 ounces of meat you can order the prime rib sandwich, hold the bread, and get about 4 ounces.) The peppercorn tenderloin is also excellent. The oysters Rockefeller were excellent. (we saw one guy eat 36 of them!) They offer a wide range of food options, including a number of Greek items, reflecting the fact that the long-time chef is of Greek heritage. Amanda was great.

We stopped in for dinner the other night and enjoyed it as always. They have a nice wine list, we always find a good bottle or two and we did this evening. We had the pimento cheese plate and a Rubin sandwich, both delicious. The service is always very good and we love the atmosphere.
