Where to eat Mediterranean food in Leros: The Best Restaurants and Bars
Leros is not short of great restaurants. The Well and the Paradeisos spring to mind in Vromolithos. The 7 Gates in Lakki too. However, the Recipe is astonishing. The cook is apparently Bulgarian and a damned genius. I mean, truly awesome. I consider myself something of a trencherman but my normally wordly wise cynicism was overwhelmed by some of the dishes. There were several WTF! moments when a new course turned up. Where else could you get Eton Mess - Pavlova in the Med? The local dishes are intriguing and we stole the recipes. The staff are charming and very knowledgeable about what they are serving. They really make you feel at home. The wine list is excellent with good Greek and international grapes. The staff humoured us when we ordered two bottles of the Katogi Averof (our favourite Greek tipple). The menu says the cocktails are awesome and, well, they are. My wife fell in love with the Black Russians (the drink) and I was rather too taken with their version of the brandy Alexander. The clientele varies. Early evening appears to be families and the older set (including myself) but as the night goes on, it becomes the younger person's haunt and, in theory, stays open until dawn. However, the juke box was very good for the hours (many hours) that we were there. To find it, simply look for the red building on the harbourfront next to the police station. If you spot a couple of English people, sitting there watching the meteor swarms over the bay, buy me a drink.
