ST Signature Bugis Beach

A terrible mistake...

Reviewed By whiskidad

I booked this hotel in Nov 2020 because it had a "co-living" theme and that was when WeWork was worth tens of billions of dollars. The website was also very decent and the pictures for the rooms looked good, so I booked and then came covid. The Good: - The hotel extended my credit to book for May 2022 - The staff were very nice, helpful and cheerful The Not-So-Good: - The Android app was clunky and it didn't work until I arrived The Terribles: - The entrance is located at the back alley close to rubbish dumpsters... RATS!!! - The rooms are poorly maintained with mold everywhere - The rooms are dirty at check-in - No room cleaning and rubbish bin was never emptied - Overall condition of the hotel is poor Lastly, the hotel can be rented for "short-term" stay (by the hours) and so many young couples were checking in and out during night and day. Hence, the rooms were consistently churning and their sheets were just piling up on the lift area on every floor. If you have read this far, you can guess how this hotel has taken "co-living" to the hourly level and if I had known this and the fact that its next to dumpsters, I would have written off my credit and stayed elsewhere. To be fair, I know all hotels have had it tough with covid but at the very least, have some of the floors specifically for the "hourly" visits and then clean up the rooms for longer stays and preserve whatever brand equity the hotel had before covid. For the remaining 10 days of my trip, I booked myself at Hotel Jen @ Tanglin which, to be fair, is double ST Signature but well worth it.

It was a humid May afternoon when checking in, the sun was out, I was in a pleasant mood. I immediately noted that it was a small hotel, boutique if you will, which was nice. That might have been the only thing nice about it. Walking into the lobby is like stepping into a knock-off Wes Anderson movie. When handing over my details to get my room key I half expected a budget Owen Wilson to step out and beginning explaining the disgruntled backstories of the the staff in the hotel - it’s the only exposition I could have for them being so disgruntled, it would also explain why the customer service resembled that of unwelcoming bears (from Goldilocks and the three bears). Nonetheless, they ran out of the balcony rooms that I had requested and I was given “an upgrade”. I smiled, said thank you and popped off to my “upgraded” room to settle in. Once reaching room 301, I scanned the card, opened the door and boom. The waft of cigarette smoke hit me in the face like Mike Tyson on a budget airline. I remembered at check-in I was told on 3 separate occasions that there was a fine of 100 dollars for smoking in rooms. You can imagine our shock when the entire room stank. I proceeded and walked into room, placed my heavy bags down and went back down to reception. I walked up to the counter and told The receptionist about the room and that I wanted the original room, didn’t want an upgrade and hoped that the other room wouldn’t smell like a gentleman’s club. The receptionist then said something which could only be described as gaslighting. She said that it was probably the smell from the drilling. At this point, I was confused…Had I ever smelt a cigarette smoke before? Did I even remember the smell of tobacco? I shook my head, and proceeded to say it was cigarette smoke, I even invited her to smell it herself. After a back and forth of her lighting my gas, she agreed to message the management and “See what she could do”. I went back to my room… but when I did, it wasn’t just myself and my beloved. We came back to the room to a man drilling holes in the walls of 301 who had more sass than Mariah Carey. After telling him I needed to use the room and get changed it said “You can still use”. I’m a private individual at the best of times and the thought of changing in front of a construction man was something that wasn’t on my list of “to do’s” on this staycation. The second room was alright. Go somewhere else.

1. The check in was so painful. System broke down and had to wait more than one hour for me to get checked in. The staff is definitely not friendly at all. Many people have to wait for the check in, and it takes very very very long. 2. Dirty room 3. Nothing gets communicated to anyone because apparently the person mending the check in is not able to contact the management
