Not only was the food here exceptionally tasty, but after ordering you have the opportunity to watch Hiroshi-san make it from scratch. The portions are small if you're used to European dishes, but it's also reasonably priced.Definitely worth a visit if you like Italian cuisine!

Mario Mare offers a relaxed al fresco atmosphere with imported rattan dining furniture from Bali. We know you will love our pizzas which will be delivered to your table piping hot from our wood fired oven, imported from Modena, Italy. While enjoying the f
Being of Italian descent, I'm very picky about my Italian food.... Mario Mare definitely met and exceeded my expectations. The tomato sauce (gravy) was like my grandmother's, and the pizza and calzone crusts fresh and delicate. Salads were full of subtle flavors. I also enjoyed one of the grilled dinners.Ambience is great.... you can sit outside on the candle-lit terrace or inside at the bar. And the homemade chococello.... to die for!I'm definitely looking forward to my next time at Mario Mare! There is no greater compliment than being told that Mario Mare's tomato sauce is like your grandmother's. We are pleased that our food exceeded your expectations and that we could transport you to your grandmother's table. Come again soon - the chococello awaits!

The buildings first floor is a bakery and the first floor is Porto Caro, they are both owned and operated by the same people. My partner and I turned up fairly late in the evening but were welcomed with smiles and to our surprise someone that the lady spoke fluent English. We were the only customers at the time but enjoyed the hospitality of the friendly staff. The menu was in both English and Japanese, so that's a huge plus. The food was fantastic! When in Shimoda one must try their local specialty; fish! So we ordered the Baby Tuna dish, it was beautifully presented, succulent and bursting with flavour, I highly recommend this dish. We also had some of their handmade Chorizo sausage, this was also rather tasty. Other dishes eaten included the pepperoni pasta and the margarita pizza, I can't say much about the pasta as it was a bit bland but the pizza was the best margarita i've ever eaten to date! It was three types of cheese, fresh basil, homegrown tomatoes on the base with a sprinkling of garlic - it may not look amazing but the taste was divine! Throughout the evening we got talking with one of the owners, Ikuyo Yokoyama, who surprised us by speaking not only English but Korean as well! She even sings in all 3 languages and has a CD you can purchase, it was such a lovely dining experience that I wanted a momento and ended up purchasing her CD - and am I ever glad I made that purchase, i've listened to it many times since then! Her voice is beautiful.Ikuyo told us about the famous writer that she had met several times, Yukio Mishima and even showed us photos of him as a boy. Yukio was fond of the Madeleine cakes that were made at this store, sold both at the bakery and as a dessert at Porto Caro - please give one a try, they are delicious! We even took some home with us. Overall the friendliness and wonderful hospitality of Ikuyo and the chef was definitely one of the highlights on my trip to Shimoda. If we ever get the chance to go back i'll be stopping by for sure! Our visit was in August 2016, so this review comes a little late but it was a dining experience I won't forget!

I was here with my sister and we couldn't believe the pizza was actually delicious! I just came back from Italy a month ago and I was really shock to actually taste such a good pizza in japan! The wine was good too. On the plus side , they have one table on the bridge and U can just drop by have a beer or coffee and enjoy the serenity of the place. We had dinner here and we manage to get the table on the bridge . It's class . Love it and I will definitely recommend this!
