Trattoria Nonno is a charming restaurant in Shinjo, a town located about midway between Tsuruoka and Ginzan Onsen. The dining room is light and airy, with patio doors opening onto a garden of veggies and herbs.
The staff was kind and provided good service. The kitchen produces excellent Italian fare and presents it quite attractively. We enjoyed a lunch set consisting of choices of appetizer (e.g. tai carpaccio), yummy al dente pasta with fresh spring veggies, and a beverage for ¥1700.
Trattoria Nonno delivers terrific value. It’s worth going out of your way for! Open for dinner also.

The menu looked good, so I gave this modest Italian place in the Nishi- Ekimae area a try. Picking one of their recommendations, I was happy that I had. I tried the Tagliatelle with baby clams, baby shrimp and a nice tomato- cream sauce. It came with a mixed salad and miso soup. The pasta was served piping hot, and just a wee bit on the cooked side of al dente, but not too much. The clams and shrimp were lovely and nicely complemented by the tomato cream sauce. At 1860 yen, including two large draft beers, you could not find such a meal for the price in most places in Munich and nowhere that I know of in the US.
The service was excellent – fast, very friendly, could not do enough for me. The other guests must have all been locals because they all had their chats with the server when paying their bills. A place full of locals is a good sign.
I went out for dinner at 18:30 thinking it was a bit on the early side. When I walked in the restaurant, many tables were full, and by the time I was half- finished, I was the only one left. Rural locales do seem to eat much earlier.
