Hotel Kogure

Really Excellent Stay

Reviewed By SandBTokyo

Kogure hotel is a fantastic place and we highly recommend it. The hotel is in Ikaho Onsen town, pretty central on the mountain, a short walk to the main street. Their property is very large with lots of parking. The hotel is really nice, spacious and very well-maintained. It is a pleasure to walk around the hotel. You will get a very friendly greeting and welcome drink in their lounge when you arrive. The service is excellent and the hotel is beautiful. The hotel is non-smoking except designated smoking boxes. Our room was on the 7th floor, top. It was a twin near the corner and has a beautiful view. The room itself seems newly renovated and felt perfect. The dinner was in a private room. Very nice dinner. Breakfast was in the main dining room, half buffet and half served. Food was good. No complaints. We travelled with our 7 year old and they were attentive to her allergies. Now for the best part. The hot spring, public bath. Wow. I have been to many onsens in Japan but this was certainly one of the top, if not the very best. The public baths are huge with so many varieties of baths. The atmosphere and design was great. The water quality at Ikaho is truly amazing. Beautiful and will not disappoint. They switch the baths for men and women overnight, so be sure to try both times. The sauna was closed due to corona virus. We went to Ikaho Green Bokujo (farm), which is a 10 minute drive away. Ikaho is a nice onsen town to visit. The hotel was managing social distancing, etc... for corona virus prevention. No weird or awkward things, just good common sense. It was comfortable and appreciated. I highly recommend Kogure hotel. We loved it.

Iron-Rich Golden Onsen, Great View, and Tasty Food

Reviewed By AndraYo

Location is about half way up the Ikaho Stairs, only a 3-minute walk. The Onsen was quite large, with an outdoor bath overlooking the area. The waters are clear but when they touch oxygen they turn a golden color, rich in iron with those health properties. There is also another outdoor bath, and one large indoor-bath with hot springs water flowing down the rocks. Very calming. Men and women alternate sides at midnight so don't miss one of the baths. We had a really nice room on the 8th Floor with Western-style beds, very large entry way, a Tatami room with a splendid view of the Akakgi Renzan mountains. The Biggest surprize: the room had a complete chashitsu- Japanese room for serving tea, complete with its own tokonoma, water server in the tatami, and an entrance that is only a meter high (sit on your knees and slide through). If you request it, they could arrange a little ceremony for you! Pick up some of their Daruma senbei cookies for a great present. To be honest, the outside is pretty shabby, when we drove up I said, "What have I gotten us into?" Inside is very clean and new for a hotel built in 1868!

Incredible service and beautiful room!

Reviewed By Katie B

If you’re ever in Gunma, stay here! We felt so welcome and received the best possible hospitality, which made our experience in the area all that more enjoyable. Everyone who worked there tried their very best to accomodate us and help us wherever possible- even noticing when we walked outside without umbrellas to then sprint after us to give us two umbrellas. When we were shown our room, one of the hosts showed us around and also gave us a complimentary tea ceremony which was a lovely cultural experience. The room itself was a beautiful traditional tatami room with a great balcony area and lovely views. Everything was incredibly clean! Would recommend this place to anyone going to the area! Thank you, Mimatsukan!

Well located, charming hotel with beautiful grounds. The meals were a ceremony in itself, we were well looked after. Onsens clean, and corridors decorated with little arty bips and bops. The hotel staff when out of their way to help us find accommodation for our next leg of holiday (we had difficulty as everything was full). Front desk concierge wins an award for being super helpful! Thank you so much for a wonderful stay and impeccable hospitality.

One of the best ryokan I stayed...

Reviewed By Peter C

This ryokan is located in the famous Ikaho Onsen, in the Gunma Prefecture. Owned by the same famous ryokan operator of Fukuichi, who is in the business for the 17th generation and over 400 years, this ryokan has really taken the comfort, luxury, care and service to the next level. After dropping off from our car, the staff greeted us warmly and showed us to the big lobby, which was in the side of Fukuichi, and originally I have to admit that it seemed just like another big ryokan tailoring for many visitors. But after a short while of waiting, we were shown to the annex, going out from the main building through a private access for the guests of Kaichoro. And the wonder begins... Arriving on the second floor, where there is only three rooms of 'Modern Japanese Style Suite' type, the corridor already impressed me a lot, where there is a lighted wall showing the flowers and vegetation design mural representing the ryokan, providing a sense of serenity to us. Entering the room I have to say I dropped my jaw on the size and comfort that greeted me. The living room is huge (15 mat in size), with warming lighting illuminating the great tone of wood and paper famous for interior design in Japan. In order to hide the TV, bookshelf, and the pantry on one side, the ryokan has used a wall of paper sliding door to create a tidy and simple feel, but once you open the doors you can immediately access to the enjoyment of the modern appliances. On the other side is the bedroom, which is of western style. The choice of mattress, comforter and pillow again highlighted how the ryokan has taken the attention to details to such an exceptional level. Not only there is different choices of pillow for the guest to choose (and those are available in the room so you can try it out), the comforter is made from Eider Duck feathers, which is super soft, light and warm, and is known as the jewel of comforter and the best that money can buy. And they also deliberately lowered the roof and created a curved shape to provide better sense of security and coziness to help give you a good sleep. Looking out the windows there is a wall of green, and there is a balcony where you can sit and relax, while admiring at the natural beauty, the sense of quiet and tranquility, while sipping at a drink (all the drinks in the fridge are provided for free) and listening to the river flowing below is simply the best way to smooth out the nerves and pressure from our daily lives. But that is obviously not the only way. Adjacent to the balcony is a semi-open bath, with the bathtub made from the expensive Ofuro wood, and the 'Silver' spring water from the Ikaho onsen. The size of the tub is also big for the family to bath together. With such pleasure in the room we really don't have much incentive to go visit the public bath this time. The make-up and shower room is also huge in size. With two basins so you can need to fight in the morning for the make-up, the ryokan has provided good quality amenities, such as 'Thann' skin-care kits for each of us. They are also using the same brand for all the bath gel, shampoo and conditioner too. After going for a short walk at the onsen street, we went back to take a short break and then went to dinner, also located in the same annex. The meal was again phenomenal. Not only the food is tasty, all the utensils used are also a piece of art by itself. After a good sleep, the next morning we have another wonderful breakfast. Like the dinner, each elements of the meal was carefully thought out and the chef had taken the effort to create a memorable experience on both our palate and visual. Many people may wonder how much would this cost. Frankly Kaichoro is one of the most expensive ryokan I have ever stayed. For the one night with two meals it cost us 182,000 yen, which of course is a big amount. Having said that, it is still one of those places I would recommend you to visit once in your life if you can afford that. My overall rating is 9.0/10.

Good ambience, average food

We chose this old ryokan because of its location near several local hotsprings. Very friendly staff. But don’t go there to experience sophisticated cuisine or exquisite décor if judged by Japanese ryokan standards.
